HD single-screen video short, work-in-progress, 2011
Based on the play by C. Wright Cronin, Ethan Allen Nights is a surrealist reenactment of the imaginary night before the storming of Fort Ticonderoga by Revolutionary War heroes Ethan Allen and the Green Mountain Boys. This short experimental narrative follows Ethan (Jim Clark) as he descends into the depths of his own violent impulses, spurred by his communication with otherworldly spirits. Accompanying him around the campfire is his doubting brother Ira (Tyler Sinclair) and his vapid cousin Remember (John Johanson) who nevertheless yield to their charismatic leader. As the gang conspires about the impending violence, Mary, Ethan’s abandoned wife, played by Hezzie Johanson, speaks to us from her room, writing invisible letters of anger and hatred to Ethan as she slowly turns to stone, revealing the dark, grievous side effects of Ethan's power, religiosity, and fame. One part history, one part fantasy, one part speech act, the story weaves a disturbing and enigmatic tale about local myths, youth, and the disillusionments of time.
