Kyambi Manzi lives with her 5 children in the drought stricken area of Mwingi, Eastern Kenya. In the past she and her children have had to survive on porridge made with the seeds and leaves of a tamarind tree on her farm.
She is now a member of a Food for Assets project, which ActionAid implements with the World Food Programme and the Government of Kenya. Instead of handing out food aid, members work in community groups on climate adaptation measures: terracing farms, introducing drought resistant crops, planting fruit trees and water harvesting.
The difference between Kyambi's farm and those of neighbours who haven't joined the project is clear.
