1. Max Persson - Shader/Lighting TD - Showreel 2011
3 months ago
I'm a shader and lighting TD with extensive programming skills. Having worked in numerous photorealistic CG projects I have developed a solid understanding for shading, lighting and rendering in all kinds of situations. I'm also really good problem solver and very focused on the task at hand.
I have worked mainly in Maya but now I'm completely in love with Houdini!

Breakdown
1 - Shading, Lighting, Rendering
I shaded the car model and lighted it using an HDRI taken on location (by the background photographer). The shot was then tweaked with additional lighting to match with the background photo. Created in Maya, rendered with Turtle.
2 - Shading, Lighting, Rendering
This is the same car model as in 1 which I lighted using an HDRI taken on location (by the background photographer). Additional lighting was used to lift the subject. Created in Maya, rendered with Turtle.
3 - Shading, Lighting, Rendering, Compositing
I shaded the product and integrated it with the background plate using an HDRI taken on location. In this shot the cord was shot live on a dummy, the vacuum body and brush is CG. I composited the beauty pass and additional passes with the background. Created in Maya, rendered with VRay, composited in After Effects.
4 - Background, HDRI, Shading, Lighting, Rendering
I lit this shot with an HDRI which I shot using a Spheron camera on a low tripod. The background was shot with short depth of field which was matched with post depth of field from a Z depth pass. I shaded the product using a slightly metallic plastic and SSS plastic. Created in Maya, rendered with VRay.
5 - Shading, Lighting, Rendering
This shot was lit in a full CG studio using gradient mapped area lights. The lighting was created together with a traditional studio photographer and was carried out in a way he recognized from real life work. I shaded and textured the car model. Created in Maya, rendered with VRay.
6 - Shading, Lighting, Rendering
This is a shot done in a similar way as in #5, it was part of the same job of about 15 shots. In this close up I did additional detailing on the lamp glass and interior. Created in Maya, rendered with VRay.
7 - Background, HDRI, Shading, Lighting, Rendering
I shot the HDRI on location together with the background and used it to integrate the CG model in the shot. Created in Maya, rendered with VRay.
8 - Shading, Lighting, Rendering, Some Compositing
I shaded and lighted the model in a studio environment. The sequence was rendered in several layer and passes and the wipe was created in post using a depth mask along the X axis. Created in Maya, rendered with VRay, composited in After Effects.
9 - Shading Supervision, Lighting Supervision, Compositing
I supervised and guided an intern who was learning shading and lighting. I composited this and several similar shots using layers and passes and created depth of field and motion blur in post. Created in Maya, rendered with VRay, composited in Nuke.
10 - Animation, Shading, Lighting, Rendering, Compositing
This is the same model as in #7 but this time lit using a generic HDRI and additional studio lighting. I also did the animations of the product for this job. Created in Maya, rendered with VRay, composited in After Effects.
11 - Shading, Lighting, Rendering
I shaded the interior and lit it using a studio light setup outside the car. This shot was done together with a traditional photographer. Created in Maya, rendered with VRay.
12 - Modeling, Shading, Lighting, Rendering
This is a full CG shot where I modeled the tunnel to fit the image idea. Everything was shaded and lit using a combination of HDRI, indoor lights and studio lights. Created in Maya, rendered with VRay.
13 - Shading, Lighting, Rendering
I created this shot as one in a series of close-ups. It's lit using gradient mapped area lights as a studio shot. Created in Maya, rendered with VRay.
14 - Shading, Lighting, Rendering
This is the same car model as in 1 which I lighted using an HDRI taken on location (by the background photographer). The shot was then tweaked with additional lighting to match with the background photo. Created in Maya, rendered with Turtle.
15 - Modeling, Shading, Lighting Supervision
I completed the model, which was originally from a very incomplete CAD model, with a lot of custom detailing. The complete interior was then shaded. I supervised the lighting which another member of the team did. Created in Maya, rendered with VRay.
16 - Shading, Lighting, Rendering, Retouch
This is originally a tech evaluation for creating procedural water drops. It's done using a water leveled displacement on the original surface shaded with a water material. The drop pattern is procedural noise with a lot of modifiers where it can appear on the surface. Created in Maya, rendered with VRay, retouched in Photoshop.
17 - Shading, Lighting, Rendering
I shaded the model and floor and lit it using studio lighting creating a moody expression. The rain was partly rendered by me and partly retouched by a team member. Created in Maya, rendered with VRay.
18 - Shading, Lighting, Some Rendering
This is a full CG shot where I shaded and lit the car using a combination of sky light and simulated flash / tube lights. I also created several fog and dust passes using volumetrics and particles. Other team members created and rendered the environment. The sky and horizon details were added in retouch. Created in Maya, rendered with VRay.
I have worked mainly in Maya but now I'm completely in love with Houdini!

2 months ago I was really impressed with the 16, I know it's really tricky to get water droplets to look as good as that. -
Max Persson 2 months agoThanks! It's tricky with water as you say. This time it's all procedural, which is really nice.
