This is an excellent overview of not only the data crash and lessons learned from Ma.gnolia, but a really good overview of social bookmarking, start-ups, web apps, ruby on rails, and much more. Deep thanks for sharing this!

I was one of the many who lost valuable bookmarks. I was pretty peeved. That being said, I'd agree with doncrowley: this interview showed bravery on Larry's part. The business world is littered with companies that mess up and show no contrition. Larry put himself out there for the world to see and apologized (as he should). For whatever it's worth, Larry, this matters to me.

I have to admit that I am humbled by a) Larry's post crash actions b) knowing that ma.gnolia was a one-person show and c) he self-financed the show.

Maybe one lesson entrepreneurs can learn from ma.gnolia is how to prepare for success. Another is knowing when to face economic reality. Ma.gnolia needed a viable business model. I really wish Larry had reached out to his community for financial help. Best of luck to you, Larry!

I back up enjoysthin.gs every night, but every time I read the word ma.gnolia, I back it up by hand again. I also start inserting periods into random words.
