At the time of filming, it was estimated that there were around 21,000 Monrach butterflies, clustering high in the Eucalyptus trees at the Pismo Monarch Grove. Each day as the weather becomes warmer in the early afternoon, as if by some unseen cue, the butterflies take flight and mate in the air. As the day goes on, they settle into large clusters in the Eucalyptus trees, resembling Autumn leaves with their rusty color. It was a truly unique experience.
