1. Fire (Jimmy Edgar Remix)-Codebreaker Feat. Kathy Diamond
9 months ago
Artist: Codebreaker feat. Kathy Diamond
Directed, Shot and Edited by Erik West
Copyright 2009 Disco Demolition Records

None of the snow in this piece is simulated. I went out and show on the snowiest days of winter. The last scenes in the video were shot during a blizzard.

This was shot on a Canon Powershot SD630 Point & Shoot.
Additional footage was shot on a Sony EX1 by Jeff Thomas.
Posted using Final Cut, Photoshop, Motion and Color.

Where is this? You did a great job and it looks fantastic. That shoot must of been freeeeeezing!
  • Erik West plus 8 months ago
Jared, This was shot in Milwaukee, Wi. It was even colder on the roofs of parking garages!

the combination of time lapse and simulated tilt-shift make for a splendid look at winter life as if it were an ant colony.

  • Erik West plus 8 months ago
Thanks to everyone who commented. I shot this in Milwaukee, Wi USA. Yes, it was freezing but worth it!
This was my first experiment with T/S and I am hooked.
I would really like to try some non-simulated T/S with a DSLR.

awesome, what a great idea to combine tilt shift with motion :)
  • Erik West plus 8 months ago
Thanks, I had an original cut that had much more pan and scan movement. Because I shot this at 1600x1200 and posted in 720P, I had a lot of room to move. In the end, I felt it took away from the purity of the effect. Definitely want to experiment more with that though.

    Awesome video!
What were your camera settings on this and did you shoot to cards or tethered? I'm amazed you did it all post.
    Very nice
  • Erik West plus 8 months ago
    Thanks Ryan,
    Settings were: ISO 100, 1600 x 1200, Fine mode to a card.

I absolutely love everything about this, I don't even know where to begin. From Codebreaker to Milwaukee snowstorms to the fact that it was done with a point and shoot. What really put it over the top for me was the scene of de-icing US Airways planes, where I used to work. Bravo.
  • Erik West plus 8 months ago
    Thanks Tim,
The airport stuff was shot with the EX1. I wish it was with the point and shoot. It was WAY easier to work my magic with the P&S files.

Wow! What a video! You did this for fun or is this actually an offical videoclip?

What I really love about this video, besides the snow and the good photography, is that due to the S/T it almost looks like a toy world. At first I even thought that this was a model city or something with toy cars and planes.
  • Erik West plus 8 months ago
    Thanks MUZIEK,
I actually produced this for the band Codebreaker.
The song is fantastic!. You should check out the original version too.

OMFG!! How the hell do you do to simulate tilt shift?!! It's simply amazing, it seems a diorama!! I wonder if it's possible with Premiere pro... Very Very Nice job! Che Spettacolo!!
  • Nick Botto 8 months ago
To simulate tilt-shift, you just layer two images, gaussian blur the top one, then mask out about a quarter of the image in what appears to be the middle ground that you want in focus, and then blur the mask to add soft edges and you have your approximation of tilt-shift. :) Of course, experimentation will allow you to refine the technique, and true tilt-shift exhibits an intricate non-linear edge to the line between blurred and in-focus areas.

  • michael.marianek plus 8 months ago
FUCK the technique and wasting space talking about it. You held tight to a beautiful and simple concept and this production shines. I'm very happy someone sent me this link to view.... Plus damn Codebreaker nice track
  •
  • michael.marianek plus 8 months ago
No please let me take back my last comment. that is why i love Vimeo because we can intelligently talk about the technique and become a community. I just get frustrated when I read comments that seem to ignore other comments previously posted. I'm from Milwaukee currently living in Germany and I have the hugest grin on my face seeing those snowplows go to the race track.

Erik did you use the continuos shooting function and of corz with tripod right?
  • Erik West plus 8 months ago
That is correct. I had to stabilize in Motion because I was actually holding down the button in continuous mode and the shots bounced a bit.
  •

  • Very nice man! I tried in PS CS4 and did a basic Gaussian Blur...what was your workflow? Did you do a batch filter process in photoshop for your 4,500 images? Would you mind posting your basic workflow?

    Thanks!

Yep, that is what I did. Stay tuned, I will be posting the workflow soon.

Great final piece. Originally from Milwaukee I recognized a lot of these areas.

Approx. how long did the post-production take?
  • Erik West plus 8 months ago
    Thanks Bill,
It took some time due to the majority of the image processing being done in Photoshop. Luckily, photoshop has the ability to batch effect groups of photos, so the computer worked longer than I did. I chipped away at it - processing the images from one snow day while waiting for the next one.

Wow, this is a fantastic video. You shot my house and made it look incredible. Do you know someone at Diamond Tower, or did you have to ask for access? Also, that little one story, curved roof house in the exact center of the first shot is my favorite in all of Milwaukee. Thank you so much for featuring my hood.

    Thanks AJ,
Yeah, I know someone in DT. I have shot many a rooftop scene from there.

T/S is cool! Simulated T/S...that's very cool! So let me get this straight. Those are all multiple still pictures....or did you just do a batch removal of a portion of video throughout the vid' to get the stop motion feel? You said you did a batch process of 2 layers for each frame in the film/video....what software did you use to do the Gaussian Blur, Masking, And Blur for the soft edges?

    Thanks!

One other thing. I find T/S very inherently interesting to watch, even if there really is no complete story to tell. You'll note that I dish out some helpful writing techniques on some videos that seem to get lost and have no place really to go. But with Tilt Shift...I just get lost in the toy land feel. Just an interesting side note. - Cheers!
  • Erik West plus 8 months ago
    Thanks Duke,
All footage is time lapse, both with the point and shoot and with the EX1. It is all shot at 1fps. I slowed the footage down in post. Photoshop was used for the effect.

fabulous video. And what commitment to concept and process.
Moving onto your thought to use a DSLR with a tilt shift
( perspective control) lens, is that just for resolution? Other than using a large format stills camera 4x5, 8x10 etc, with a seemingly infinite array of perspective and focus shape shifting, a DSLR lens just wont give you the altered focus planes you've utilised in the video. The same applies to complex motion with perspective control prime movie lenses. Evenso having achieved what you have in this video, I'd have to say 'go for it'!
Also for a note the work of Japanese photographer, Noaki Honjo, and Finnish photographer Miklos Gaal might give fuel to your thoughts.
    Chapeau bas!
  • Erik West plus 7 months ago
    Thanks Marq,
In a way, half the fun was using the Point and shoot camera for something that was going to be edited in 720P. I really liked the idea of shooting something with such a "lo-fi" camera that ultimately ended up in High Def. In a way giving the finger to all of the new, expensive DSLR cameras that can shoot HD. Right after this video was finished, I got a Canon DSLR and a Lens Baby (lo-fi tilt shift lens). And once it warms up here I plan on experimenting with that. I am done with the snow.
Thanks for the references. If you haven't seen his work, check out Keith Loutit on Vimeo. His work is what inspired me to make this video. He shoots with real T/S lenses.

Great effect. You could use Alien Skins Bokeh filter to easily create and apply the tilt effect to numerous files.
