This is a year-long time-lapse study of the sky. A camera installed on the roof of the Exploratorium museum in San Francisco captured an image of the sky every 10 seconds. From these images, I created a mosaic of time-lapse movies, each showing a single day. The days are arranged in chronological order. My intent was to reveal the patterns of light and weather over the course of a year.

Brilliant. But how does daylight savings figure in?
  •
  • Ken Murphy 3 months ago
I sidestep the whole daylight savings issue by ignoring it... the clock that's used to sync the images never "springs ahead" or "falls back". That seemed to make sense for this piece.

    Absolut awesome.

It demonstrates a unique way, the weather, the time, the wind direction. In the middle of the year it rains often. Then again, lots of sun and clouds at the end of the year often.

That was beautiful. I think another version looking at the western sky so that the video ends with an array of cascading sunsets might be a nice follow-up to this.

Absolutely, positively phenomenal! Thank you for sharing this project, Ken. I am always amazed at the time, energy and heart (not to mention absolute will) that artists exude to complete their work. This is a great example of a wonderful idea executed brilliantly. Well done!

That was quite interesting, and obviously a lot of work on your part. Being shot in San Francisco, I would have expected more rain. I guess if anyone needs time-lapse of the sky, you're the guy to see! Yes, would have been interesting to see the sun sinking in the sky, but I also realize the exposure problems. The only way to watch this is in HD on a big screen. Also interesting how 360 frames fit so neatly on a full 16:9 frame. So how did you edit this? Just build 360 video tracks? I'm surprised no one F*** with your camera...or did they?
Anyway, nice job, and congrats on seeing your project through. I don't think I would have had the patience to see this through. By the way, the music choice was perfect.

Congratulations Ken, you've had a brilliant and simple idea but very direct and shows us what we most often do not observe ail: the sky
the idea of a good window for each day, which then become fully dark filled all through the night. You are elegant.

    Clap Clap Clap, Ken!
That's an awesome poetic (and a bit scientific video).

I've always been interested in the sky, and the fact of singling out days of a year. So I did one (really poor) video, with the same idea: vimeo.com/18065849

Thanks for letting me stumble upon your work ;)

one night I had a dream,I saw a ship with a man standing beside in it,we have a conversations,But i refused to do so, I am afraid If I could not fulfill his order.then while I'm on my way, I remember what he said,so I tried to find a way to do it,but first I wonder why I build a stairway to heaven,But unfortunately, wrong people are climbing on it.But I tried to make it right to everybody are being fit to climb,But till now no one are being fitted, you now why nobody tell the truth.and keep on climbing the stair.

Wow!! Incredible. When the videos fade from black - is that sunrise? Also when they fade out - is that the time-lapse naturally fading to black because of sunset? Or was this done in post production?

Answered my own question after watching your kickstarter video :) Contrats on funding the campaign! Did you build the monitor setup?
  •

Jayden - thanks! I used the kickstarter funds to build this multi-monitor setup: murphlab.com/2011/08/08/recent-events-createfixate-and-mapp/
