My good friend and environmentalist writer Ben Jervey is currently in the arctic sailing amongst the frozen sees of the 78th parallel. The trip consists of artists, scientists, and writers who are gathering data, writing, and making art in the hope to convey the effects of climate change on the arctic icecap, and in turn, the world.

•••UPDATE: Factual inaccuracies in my intro video.
So the scientists onboard see me straight on some of the minor inconsistencies re: our route and the ice cap. I said, erroneously, that "the 78th parallel has never before in human history been free of ice." (It can be rather important, in this field, to keep the facts tidy, as the naysayers will latch onto anything to discredit the cause.) So let me be clear that while the 78th parallel HAS before, and regularly, been clear of ice, including some stretches we sailed, that the arctic icecap has lost a full 25% of its mass in the past 30 years. Which is significant. Very much so.

this is awesome. Thanks for making & sharing this Blake, and thanks to Ben for being brave and raising awareness in such an interesting way. I look forward to watching the updates. I'm wishing Ben & the rest of the crew a safe and happy journey!

i hope we can update video while he's actually up there!
  • B. Jervey plus 2 years ago
really sorry we weren't able to update any video from up there. a wireless signal was tough to come by up where the seas do turn to ice. we'll have some updates soon. might send along a teaser that'll be poorly edited by myself (or my brit buddy matt who was on the boat).

    so where are the updates?
  • B. Jervey plus 11 months ago
ha...very good question. i left about 9 hours worth of footage on blake's hard drive last fall. i think it's still marinating. we should check it soon and see if it's ready to prepare. real life and professional obligations had a way of socking this stuff straight to the back burner. hopefully soon. for real.

It's sweet to hear of scientists and artists together. It seems like the same caliber of united force as if you had like, wizards and transformers
  • Blake Whitman staff 2 years ago
I would love to see wizards and transformers together in any context.

just docked in Iceland. we (as should have been anticipated) didn't find any roaming wireless signals up there in the arctic circle, thus i wasn't able to get any videos up yet. but i've got heaps of raw footage that'll start making its way to this channel. highlights to include: rough seas, vomit, art made of ice, threats to our ship's stability (also made of ice), and, yes, polar bears. stay tuned.
  • ryan brown plus 2 years ago
were there other threats to your ship's stability?

    pirates? storms? pirates?
  • B. Jervey plus 2 years ago
yes there were: wind, storms, pirates, the elusive white rainbow*, a rogue WWII mine, and more pirates.

*which i can't discuss. just know that it was outright horrifying, i think my soul was poisoned by it. (although others seemed to find it cute.)

after finally watching this, i'm noticing a couple of, er, factual inaccuracies that i might've fumbled in that late-night, unplanned for recording session. i'll make some corrections at some point and put them in the intro.

and as soon as i get back to NYC, i'll (with blake's necessary assistance) start recounting the journey. thawing out in London for a few days first.

Right on Jervey and Blake! I'm psyched to see the early makings of this proj. after hearing about it in August! Jervs, the singing on the boat scene was strangely familiar...
Can't wait to see you in Cali next week and hear all about it man.
