Short doco on Pierce. A Texan native who loves his guns!

Shot on the RED Epic and Phantom Flex.

A hard subtitled English version is here: vimeo.com/32805807

Am not a gun fan at all. I would say I am quite anti-them for my own reasons... but I am damn curious about why people have a fascination for them so I wanted to make this film to get a glimpse into why someone loves them so damn much...

Yeah, now I'm bummed that I didn't come! Seems like you guys had a mini NAB down there.

Your work keeps getting better and better. Let's see where all of this takes you. Usually when you go with the flow, you end up in the right place ;)

Agreed, great work! Loved the slow mo shots. I'm against guns myself but there's something admirable about someone if he shoots to eat....a lot of us forget about where our food comes from when we pick it up at fast food restaurants

I heard an interview with George Carlin once where he was talking about his early, suit-and-tie days when he'd play nightclubs and casinos and the audience was filled with hippies - except back then it used to mean people who thought they were hip and acted like Sinatra.

You should make a web series out of these mini docos - Bloom's People. I'm not sure whether I like this better or just equally to Booths and Bodies, but this is marvelous - and I guess is a more artistically satisfying version of the kind of pieces you'd sometime produce back in your news days?

Good point. But if you tell Philip it's starting to look like a series, he'll make the next one look totally different!

Nice work, Philip, the slow motion sequences looked great.

    hi there !

From you blog post you say:

"I also used the Heliopan Vari ND to keep the shutter speed to 360 degrees."

Why did you use a 360 degree shutter instead of 180 ?
    Thanks
  • andrearusky 3 months ago
    ohh.. OK
I see now that you changed and fixed the blog post.
You were shooting with the shutter at 180 degree angle not 360.

The slow motion segments of the casings being ejected from the different handguns/rifles were quite amazing. Felt like I was in a nicely stylized action film. On top of that the interview subject himself was very interesting. Great work once again.

Amazing short documentary into this man's piece of life. And as much as I want to ask questions about the camera gear, I know I am no where near being able to use those cameras, so the question seems silly. I would however, like to ask about the audio gear and issues you where having with that.

First off, what audio set up do you use to capture such clear precise audio? And secondly, what do you think was the reason behind the audio hum on this shoot?

All the best, enjoy your time in the States, and I look forward to your next video!

I'm generally a bit afraid of rednecks! But he seems to be very sympathic. And you did some great slowmo-shots of really cool guns. But I would never own a gun myself because I would stay in prison for the rest of my life. I would shoot each guy who pisses me of or kill myself cleaning it. This is why I don't think guns are good for people.
  •
  • great work, didnt' think i would like it, but it pulled me in. I have a new found appreciation and respect for 'rednecks' and 'hippies'. And the Phantom Flex is INSANE!! Amazing footage.

I'm dying to see this guy tear it up on a BMX! I know people like this. I too hate guns, but there are lots of people in the US who are just like Pierce. They just want to fire off some rounds, hang out and enjoy themselves. It's not about killing and hatred. They just have a good time.

It seemed the intent was to do some camera tests but the gunshots took me out of the man's interesting description of the community.
  • Philip Bloom pro 3 months ago
Hi Evan, if you read my blog post I explain what my intention for the film was.

For first time I was offered a I had phantom for the day. I wanted a story not just slow motion shots so the focus is on Pierce his story, his love of guns. It was always going to be about guns. That was the most important part.

The phantom stuff adds polish. If you stayed on him and not showed b-roll would you stick with it all the way? Most wouldn't. It is about adding visual interest.

Personally I do not think it took away. I think it added to the piece.

    Best

    P
  • evan scott plus 3 months ago
Philip, Don't get me wrong. The shots of the guns were excellent, but you pulled me in so quickly and deeply into this remarkable character you found (shooting very close and intimate) and the delineation between his hippie life and his neighbors 'redneck' lifestyle. I was hungry to see some cutaways to the differences between their lives and his after he explained them as this is a topic that I have never encountered before. Who are these redneck hippies? Very interesting stuff.

I was not expecting it to take the turn into talking about guns. That's all. I had read on your blog about how you had gotten a hold of the Phantom and I figured you wanted to get something interesting with a story attached which is understandable. No harm here brother just a bit of dialogue about your work.
  • Philip Bloom pro 3 months ago
That's cool Evan. My goal was always to do a piece about why people love guns. I rarely through viewers straight in, I like people to get to know the person so when we talk about something potentially controversial you know him...well that was the idea...
  • ryan roehl plus 3 months ago
Yup makes sense to me, you want to talk about guns, you get the back story, than you talk about guns.
  • ryan roehl plus 3 months ago
On second thought, I agree with Evan, your title is a little misleading.
  • Philip Bloom pro 3 months ago
Misleading? It's what he calls himself...misleading would be "The man who loves to knit"

It looks great but I was left a little unsatisfied considering you call it a doc: the title promised more than the clip delivered... I would have liked to see more of this guy, his home, his surrounding... there is no context except for the slomo gunshots, which, however beautiful, do not add anything after the third or so insert. (these were your 'darlings' that you should have killed, 'shot' preferably...)
A while into the interview I would have liked to see him in a different setting (see him move, see some body language) because you want/need to take distance to be able to 'see' the guy, literally get a different perspective on him.
I find the redneck-hippie interesting as a concept but in the end he seems just a redneck in a hippie body. I would have liked you to ask him what the hippie-side in him represented. In what does he truly differ from a redneck?
Just a few notes and I understand you had little time, too little time for the extra shots to make it a real mini-doc. I liked the way you sat him down on the porch, letting him sit on the rocking chair was brave(!) with that DOF. Liked the empty chair with the pee in the background. All in all nice pace and looks. A grateful subject.

Can't get enough of your new 'controversial' mini docs.
I feel your finest skill may well be your ability to convey the subject's character so well. Just wish your detractors would quit trying to 'shoot' the messenger.
