D90 is a wonderful camera.
I think the results are fine, without the need a manual lens (my lens are not manual, you cannot control aperture if you lock exposure).
I put a polarized filter and locked exposure when objects are underexposed. After that I remove the filter and light is recovered!
One more thing, I used Auto ISO (max. 400, min shutter speed 1/30).
