Great timelapse, the first I have seen with HDR.. what did your post production flow look like to put this together? Also Im sure your motion control you had to tweak to make sure all 3 shots were made for HDR before the move.
  • Tanguy Louvigny plus 3 months ago
Thanks Jon ! I create hdr files from bracketed shots and tonemap them with Photomatix 4, color correct (and remove birds etc) in After effects and edit in Premiere. You'r right, the motion control has to stop between each move to give enough time for the bracketing sequence to finish, it's custom programmed to do so...
  • Jon Minnihan plus 3 months ago
Thanks for the info.. are you using a 3 bracket shot or more?
  • Tanguy Louvigny plus 3 months ago
3 shots sequences, 3 f-stops spacing on 60D, it's sufficient to get enough dynamic range in most situations (well, more would be better but would require more time between moves)

  • Noam Armonn plus 3 months ago
    Great work.
Can you reveal your Photomatix 4 settings to avoid flicker?
I find it tricky, sometimes it works well with near to default settings, but many times flicker is too strong.
    Can you share?
  • Tanguy Louvigny plus 3 months ago
Sure ! I have no perfect solution to avoid flicker, but here are my (usual) settings in Photomatix :

    Strength 70
    Color sat 80
    Luminosity 0
    Microcontrast 1.0
White point vary, usualy around 0,800%
Black point rather low, 0.030% or so
Micro-smoothing 5.5 when too much noise

I try to minimize flicker when shooting, and use Msu deflicker to cure severe flicker in post, that's it !
  • Noam Armonn plus 3 months ago
    Thanks Tanguy, that's very helpful!
  • Dustin Farrell plus 3 months ago
Last time I tried to use Photomatix for HDR batching it flickered like hell. Useless in fact. It looks as though v4 addressed the batch inconsistencies.
  • MILapse 3 months ago
I've never been happy with Photomatix and consistency.. It also feels like ITs in the driver seat not me! Believe me, there are better ways. =)
  • Noam Armonn plus 3 months ago
@MILapse, I'm an infidel. Please enlighten me!
refers to - "Believe me, there are better ways. =)"
  • Dustin Farrell plus 3 months ago
@Jay, But Tanguy's video is MUCH better than my dozen or so tests with Photomatix a couple years ago.
  • Pierre Sirdey 2 months ago
    Gentlemen !
I took me lot's of time to find out, but I could drastically reduce the flickering of my HDR timelapse on Photomatix 4, by playing with these settings (in order of importance).
    Low Gamma
    High Smoothing
    High Micro-smoothing
Sometimes a low Gamma was enough, sometimes I had to push the 3 of them where I didn't want to and/or sometimes Photoshop was the only way.

  • 19lights plus 3 months ago
Nice job! I really like how you maximized your long exposure so that the animation is as smooth as possible. A lot of timelapses have that "stuttery" look. One question: Does the flickering come from the merge step or the tonemapping step?
  • Tanguy Louvigny plus 3 months ago
Yes hdr usualy makes flicker worse, i try to minimize it in the field but it's always a problem in post :/
Fyi no long exposure here, it would mean longer shots between moves and that would be a problem too
  •
  • Ozcan Celik 3 months ago
Nice shots... But HDR timelapses big problem is "flicker". Even you use GBDeflicker or MSU Deflicker still some flickers. So my suggestion; if you want HDR look timelapses use 8-10 stops ND Filters. Less shutter count and no flickers.
  • Tanguy Louvigny plus 3 months ago
Thanks for the tip Ozcan ! Unfortunately that would mean longer exposures - and no extended dynamic range benefit !
  • Ozcan Celik 3 months ago
Yes long exposures and this is why I said "HDR Look". Like Terge's arctic light.
  • Tanguy Louvigny plus 3 months ago
Right ! Love this video too :)
