44. Sony HDR-SR11 Camcorder Video Review - 120 Frames …
9 months ago
I took a few hours today to put this together. I hope it helps someone out there make a decision on buying a video camera.

I just got a new Sony HDR-SR11 camcorder that I will use to create video blogs for my website. My full blog is located at tomguilmette.com.

I plan on bringing this camera to television and film jobs I work to shoot behind the scenes. This camera even has a mic input so I can use a wireless or shotgun.

I forgot to mention in the review that this is a tapeless AVCHD camera. It has a 60GB hard drive built in and you have the option of using Sony memory stick Duo cards instead.

Great little camera and it only costs $700. I recommend the $130 wide angle conversion lens and the $160 underwater housing. A complete kit for under $1000! This is the same camera that Bear Grylls (Discovery Channel's Man vs. Wild) uses as a POV.

I tried to shoot a short nature film using the "smooth slow recording" feature on the SR11. This is kinda like the "overcranking" feature on the EX1. The SR11 is able to shoot 120 frames per second for a 3 second burst. The resolution is not very good, but not horrible. Watch this video review and see for yourself.

My on-camera was shot with the PMW-EX1 and the Letus Extreme with a 50mm f1.4 Nikon film lens.

Sorry about the "Canadian Goose" story, but I shot it to show you how the camera looks at full 1080 60i. Someone, somewhere is feasting on goose meat.

By the way, today was my day off and I did not feel like getting dressed up for this.

Great to see this review - and nice work with the video at the reservoir. I've had this camcorder since it was introduced, and I'm pretty pleased. Funny to see it on a tripod & head system that's probably 4x the cost of the camera.

Something new I want to try with it is work-related; that would be product videos intended for HD viewing on YouTube. Given the down-converting for Youtube, I expect the resolution to be more than sufficient. My real challenge is trying to figure out lighting solutions.

Anyway; nice job Tom - love your work!

I am thanking for presentation of this camera. Everybody eyes see for own. Someone likes which, to other no be. I can say for myself that camera charmed me, from point of view of amateur cameraman.

Sad story of goose that happens around us. Why? Who would know this?

    Tnx and regard!

This should prove helpful for someone shopping for a camera. It's a tough decision with all the options available in the market. Someone will buy this camera based on your video. Nicely done.

    Hi TOM,

The SR11 replaced the SR7 (I think). I had made this video ( vimeo.com/1413395 ) to comment on the Slow-motion function on these cameras,

And I really would appreciate your opinion on using the 3 sec slow-motion built in or pos-production editing in slow motion (for quality sake)
So if you get the time.. thanks.

On the other hand, I liked your presentational video very much, very good work, and also very sad story there ate the end.
Hope you hear and see more of your videos

You answered a question that I didn't even ask -- I'm not in the market for a HD camcorder yet -- but soon I will be

What a sad story about the Geese

Great video Tom - well shot and presented. Only concern about the camera is that it's interlaced not progressive. I'm not a big fan of interlaced and especially if I want to use it on the same timeline with my EX-1 footage.

Whoa.. Tom Guilmette on SR11.. now my life's complete!!
I used to deinterlace with Blend Field option, then I found out its better to use Interpolate Field. That way we get a sharp images not a blurry ones when paused (for masking, motion tracking, etc.). What do you think?

I can hardly imagine this compression is editable (16mbps avchd right?). Do you convert the files to a better usable format?

Dude, I can't believe you painted your living room chroma green, and it's not that I don't like it, It's just that my wife would probably shoot me if I did, and not with a video camera. That and the fact that I would need to move all the furniture every time I had cool idea. I'd probably end up stashing all my furniture in the garage.

    By the way, cool camera...

    Nice!
Where can/did you find a mounting plate like that? I have a Sony HVR HD1000U and it's the same as that Sony you have in terms of mounting. Help, please!
    Thanks!

Tom, I've had my SR11 for several months now. The built-in mic sucks. Can you recommend a nice low profile mic as an add on? I have the same wide angle lens and think its great. I just can't seem to remember the exact menu clicks to turn it off and on easily.

As far as editing goes, I've tried Premier Pro CS4, Premier Elements 7, and Vegas 9. Neither of those will display more than 1 frame per second. What do you recommend?

Thanks. Can't wait for the mountain biking videos? Will you use a helmet cam?
