Really great work, one of those rare videos that makes it hard to believe it was filmed with an HV20.
  • Eric Tsutomu 9 months ago
Wow thanks for the compliment man. It means a lot!
  •
  • jborg 9 months ago
It's amazing that such an inexpensive camera produces such great images. I have an HV30. I love it. This is a nice vid... so clean and crisp. Some of the hand-held shots were a bit shaky. Not sure if you were going for this or not, but it works in the project.
  • Christopher Ruffell plus 9 months ago
I'm with jborg on this: I too own an HV20, and this just shows that I can still be blown away and impressed by the quality that the HV series can capture - that and you nailed it quality-wise with your piece. The post colour was a nice touch, as were the film-burns (I use 'em in my work too).
  • Eric Tsutomu 9 months ago
jborg: Yeah i definitely feel you on the 'shakiness', but in some ways, I kind of like the 'rawness' of it in that aspect. However, a steadicam could come into good use, haha. Nonetheless, thanks for compliment, and I definitely agree with you that the HV30 is an amazing camera for it's price!

Chris Ruffell: Thank you for the compliment. Like I stated above, I agree with you that the HV20/30 is a quality camera for it's price. That's really cool that you use film burns too, I think they add just a subtle flavor to the video.
  • Paul Shmelov 2 months ago
Nice job on the edit, it flowed nicely and the colors were great. Im just wondering since i've been looking for them for a while but where do you get your film burns?
  •
  • Vince Ream 9 months ago
Wow! Fantastic image, great audio choice. The HV30 is a very capable camera, but cheers to you for using it so well. This looks very good!
  • Eric Tsutomu 9 months ago
Thanks Vince, I appreciate it. Yes, I'm very satisfied for what the HV30 is capable of and I felt that Mogwai fit the mood of the video.

Yep, looks very cool and impressive.

I feel a shame that I can not produce that kind of quality with my HV20 :(
I think I will just stay "the point and shoot vacation dude" ;)
  • Eric Tsutomu 9 months ago
Thanks man. I am flattered that you like the quality of my picture, but in all honesty, you can do the same too. Color grading had a lot to do with it, for one. Maybe shooting on TV Mode can help you produce some better quality footage as well. Good luck!
  •
  • ZhiC 9 months ago
Wow, that one of the awesomeness done with the HV20. The colours are impressive! You make me want to go on vacation and retire into nature :)

  • Nolan Craigwell 9 months ago
SWEET!!!! would you be willing to do a screen capture tutorial on your color grading part?????????
  • Eric Tsutomu 9 months ago
Honestly, I would put up some before/after shots...but I actually deleted the color graded files, because of the ridiculously immense size that they ate up on my HD (I need to get an external HD badly). But, maybe I can re-color correct them and try to get them as accurate as they were depicted on the video. Thanks for watching though!

Love mogwai and especially that track. Really cool vid Eric liked the color and the location. Have you tried the smoothcam filter inFCP. Can work wonders with the old hand shake?

Thanks Michael, I was not aware of that at all. I'm still a lightweight newbie when it comes to all of that stuff. I'll be sure to check it out!

  • Tony Wingo 9 months ago
    Hey what song was this?
    You did phenomenal
Like really Ive shot some good stuff but yours was definitely award worthy
Do you enter contests in C.A?

*Edit* I saw what song it was after you answered sorry It was a silly mistake thanks for the patience and answering it.

And when I said award I didnt mean something huge like an oscar/grammy (whatever they give nowadays) but like a local film award.

Goodluck with any future contests. Insomnia film contest is cool in FL. we get 24 hours to film and edit a short film fantastic experience you should try if they have something like that.
  • Eric Tsutomu 9 months ago
Thanks Matt, it means a lot. Haha, it's a bit far-fetched to consider the video 'award-worthy', but I really appreciate your comment.

To answer your questions, the song playing is called 'Hunted by a Freak' by Mogwai.

Regarding the contests question, no, I haven't entered any contests in California, because I have yet to make a short film. However, when I do eventually make some in the future, I will be planning on it. Thanks again!

This is really great, Eric. I really enjoyed your editing transitions and was particularly blown away by the color correction. I am just learning what an art color correction is and how it can really set the mood of a piece. You seem to have mastered it well here.
  • Eric Tsutomu 9 months ago
Thanks Paul, I really appreciate it. Definitely, color and music are true very essential attributes that set the mood to a picture. Good luck with your color grading!
  • Eric Tsutomu 9 months ago
True should have been 'two', my bad.
  •
  • Great camera work and great locations as well. Apart from the few shots containing selective desaturation (of which I am not such a big fan) everything falls into place very well.
  • Eric Tsutomu 8 months ago
Haha thanks man. Yeah, I just decided to single out the red backpack on a whim because it added some flair to the video. The red backpack was so much more vibrant and different than the environment that I just decided, "Why not?"

Nice! Looks really good with TV mode. How much CC do you have to do in TV mode? Was this filmed in Niles Canyon? "Secret Side Walk"?!?! I almost got stuck in that tunnel when a train was approaching a couple years ago! Glad we heard it from a mile, we ran out when the train was about 50 yards from entering the tunnel!!! So many stories and memories, who knows whats true?
  • Eric Tsutomu 7 months ago
Sorry for the late reply. Thank you very much. Yes, this was filmed at the secret sidewalk in Niles. Wow, I've heard many stories of people getting stuck in that tunnel while a train was approaching. The tunnel looks like it's so short...until you actually go into it, haha.

Great pictures, great cutting - omly in the beginning the camera is a bit to shaky as I think.
  • Eric Tsutomu 7 months ago
Thanks, and yes I agree the camera was a bit shaky, but that was due to it being filmed hand-held.

I really liked the video. I live nearby in Livermore but never knew of the secret sidewalk. About where is it? (and don't say it's a secret :P)
  • Eric Tsutomu 6 months ago
Haha, Livermore is a pretty chill area. I go there every now and then. I can't tell...It's a 'secret'...haha naw, just playing. It's sort of hard to explain how to get there but it's basically a sidewalk hidden in Niles Canyon.

  • Was it a cloudy day or is the sky gray due to color correction?

Either way, I can't wait to see if you've got what it takes to direct. You've got an advantage when it comes to the look, and that's half the battle. Get some actors and make moves.

Make it cheap and we'll buy a copy!

Great job, to say the least.
