This is a short film by MAYA Design about information. Although most of us think we know what we mean when we say "information," we sometimes confuse the medium with the message. This is a companion piece to our film about architecture. For more information visit: maya.com/the-feed/what-is-information-architecture

aesthetically, this is beyond reproach. typography is great. animation does do a good job of augmenting your exposition.

conceptually, it comes off as a little condescending. Not to put too fine a point on it, but I think this is a good example of everything people hate about designers. the mug example: yes, i get it. i don't know which one is your favorite cause you haven't told me yet. You are really smug about your mugs.

as for your theoretical assertion that information is independent of the medium through which it is communicated, I think it's an unnecessary extension of what "information" is and what you're really talking about is abstract concepts and context. and we have great words for that already. namely, "concepts" and "context." (I can be smug too! ;) ) what about the idea of scientific discovery, where you get a collection of data you don't necessarily know much about, and through analysis discover something about the world? is that data not information? or does it become information once you actually discover something & have a conceptual basis by which to relate to it? the latter seems asinine.

don't want to be too big of a jerk, you are clearly very skilled - I think people will respond better to a bit more restraint. I hope you find this useful if you make more of these.
  • I would like to see interaction fitted in this. Can there be information without interaction? For instance, if you're never told it's the orange mug, there is no info, due to interaction? So is information equal to interaction-results?
I dare to claim it's not. (The owner of the mug always know his favorit one)

Re: Ben Hsieh's questions "is that data not information?". The answer: No. Information comes out of the data, but data is not information. Also, I did not find it to be the least bit smug.
