‘Catwalk – Black Cat Crossing’ is a humorous animated short film that takes the viewer into a
lovely and detailed designed comic city. There you're going to witness a row of odd incidents
that are obviously related to Matilda, a quite inconspicuous old lady.

this is fantastic, how did you make it?
  • no name party 2 years ago
We drew alot of linearts with some fineliner. Scanned it and preojected in 3D onto a Mesh (Maya). After weeks of pain and horrible rendertimes (we hadn't that much experience) we did it :) Everything was drawn by hand. All 3D Stuff is done in Maya and the comp was done in Combustion. :)

This is really good. I like it a lot. The line drawn style is really nice and the little details throughout make this piece a pleasure to watch. Great work.

Thanks for the comment :) It was a good practice lesson to draw all this stuff. Everything is rough and hadn't been cleaned up alot.

Hi, we needed ca. 7 months for production without any 3D, Animation and project management experience.

I'm glad you like it and we've inspired you :)

  • no name party 2 years ago
The film was created in the second semester at university :) The only thing we'd done in 3d was a photorealistic turntable of some beauty product.. :)
  • J.T 2 years ago
:O you did it all in one semester? your very talented. It took me a year to get comfortable with maya and the results are just average. Looking forward to seeing more projects from you :)

Great animation, I'm glad you've already answered the questions on workflow, sadly I have one more... Did you animate the character also in maya with IK or was that post work aswell?

Greetings from the UK my friend
  • no name party 2 years ago
Every Animation was done in Maya. We animated it via Planes. For instance the body is on one plane and the arms as well. After the planar mapping of the texture on the surface we rotated the planes in wanted positions :)

We wasn#t very experienced in post so we did it that way.
  • Lawrence Taylor 2 years ago
Thanks so much for the response I've watched this tonnes now... Great effect you've achieved, I'm impressed by the foreground elements, the composition and really like the chopper aswell! I must try this in cinema 4d now and see what can be done... Many thanks for the inspiration. Keep animating my friend.

This was very funny and clever! At the very end when the cat jumped out, I didn't quite understand until after it was completely over. Me and my brother enjoyed this a lot! By the way, the style was absolutely wonderful as well!

    hehe, thank you :).

I assume you are the first one to notice this.

It was really challenging to design this set. After all it had to be visuall appealing during a long pan.

i love your concept... i still come back to watch this often... and forwarded it to a friend of mine... he thinks it's genious.

can't wait to see more of your work!:) do you think you'll be animating "George" soon?
  • no name party 2 years ago
Thank you :) I am very happy so many people like it.

I will do the first blocking tests with George in December.
The final animation will be in February. Hopefully ;)

I really like the style, colors, usage of the depth of field (don't know if it's the good word for "profondeur de champ") and the mix between 3D and handdrawing.
  • no name party 1 year ago
Thanks for the comment. Yes it is called depth of field (dof). It took us a long way to develop the style :)
  • v-i-n-c-e-n-t plus 1 year ago

Very nice.. Also nice to know how much time this took you. I'm trying to work on a 2D flash game with some free-roam/cutscene and action elements, and the drawing part is really getting to me as well..:(

My first semester next year will also involve animation(3dsMax).. Hope I can do as good as your crew did, but really don't think so;)

    Keep going man!
  • no name party 1 year ago
Thanks for the frendly comment ;) We've been in the 2. semester.. I guess we would develop the film in much shorter time now.. i.e. drawing would be much faster.

I don't know much about flash (shame on me^^) but I wish you will habe a great time with the creation of you film :)
