HDR timelapse shot inside the now overgrown ruins of the Motel de Founex (Switzerland), which has been abandoned for over a decade, resulting in vandalism, graffiti, squatters, arsonists and scrap dealers.

The Motel:
A unique place, in an area experiencing an extreme housing shortage. It was built in 1966 like me, but went bankrupt in 1998. It is also a childhood souvenir and I always remember when we were driving home on the motorway, I would see its yellow flashing fluorescent lights in the distance, indicating our motorway exit.

The material:
A motorized skater designed and built the previous year was finally put to the test; and motorized dolly for a 3 meter rail.

The shooting:
The first difficult and demotivating attempts quickly revealed some stability problems. However, even more problematic was finding a cloudy day in this, the sunniest year of the creation. In addition, as the motel was due to be demolished to make way for companies to develop their various projects, I knew I didn’t have long to finish mine. All this, along with a difficult and long HDR post processing, added more pressure on what was … simply … a personal project.

Close encounters:
Cats, ramblers, graffitists, demolishers, scrap dealers, photographers and above all countless Romanian squatters, like Arghir, who pestered me every time to give him 150 francs to go back to his country.

Incidents
Not too many nails in my feet, no glass cuts and no falls into elevator shafts or other hole. A windshield board just caught before it crashed onto the rail. A huge wasps nest was burnt out by the demolishers. A fire (the sixth according to my fireman friend) in the royal Romanian suite.

Le Motel :
Un lieux unique dans une région de complète pénurie immobilière. Bâti en 1966 comme moi, mis en faillite en 1998, il représente aussi un souvenir d’enfance avec ses tubes fluos clignotants jaunes, qui m’annonçaient au loin notre sortie d’autoroute.

Le matériel :
Un skater motorisé conçu et réalisé l’année précédente qui allait enfin trouver une fonction et un dolly motorisé pour un rail de 3 mètres.

Le tournage :
Les premiers essais, difficiles et démotivants m’ont rapidement montré des problèmes de stabilité. Cependant, avec l’année la plus ensoleillés de la création, la pire difficulté a été d’obtenir simplement ... un ciel nuageux. Le Motel devant en plus être démoli par des entreprises annonçant des projets concrets sur le site, je savais que le temps était compté. Tout ceci, avec une post production HDR longue et difficile, ajouta un gros stress à un projet purement ... personnel.

Les rencontres :
Chats, promeneurs, tagueurs, démolisseurs, ferrailleurs, photographes en tout genre et surtout beaucoup de squatteurs Roumains dont Arghir qui essayait chaque fois de m’extorquer 150 francs pour rentrer dans son pays.

Les incidents :
Pas trop de clous dans les pieds, de coupures de verre et aucune chute dans les cages d’ascenseur ou trous divers. Une planche coupe vent rattrapée de justesse avant qu’elle ne s’écrase sur le rail, un gros nid de guêpes passé au feu par les démolisseurs et un incendie – le 6ème selon un ami pompier - dans la suite royale Roumaine.
