Very cool. What is that chrome ball you're using for?
  • AKAMA STUDIO 2 months ago
The reflective/grey ball is very useful for us as a reference of what looks like the lighting on set. When you light your 3D scene with an HDR took on set, you just have to put a chrome and grey sphere in your 3D scene, render it and compare with the reference frames of your reflective/grey ball. Then you adjust your lighting setup until it perfectly match. Even if you don't have an HDR took on set and you need to match the lighting with standards lights it still a very simple and efficient reference to have.

That was a great breakdown of the effects, some really great stuff in there!
What was the music track in the video...that was pretty sweet too!
  • AKAMA STUDIO 2 months ago
The music come from the soundtrack of Alice in Wonderland by Danny Elfman.
  • patrick 2 months ago
That is sick. That guy is too talented.
In regards to the actual video, one thing that I wasn't to sure on was the blue stand-ins for the CG characters. Were these there for tracking purposes (road shot with the cube seems obvious, and pulling them through the grass makes sense to get some movement in the practical environment) but for the tunnel scene they did not seem to have much contribution, so I assume it was for tracking too? Is this correct?

And again, really great compositing (and everything else) in there.
  • AKAMA STUDIO 2 months ago
    thank you Patrick :-)
The blue stand-ins were made to have a reference of the size of real hedgehogs so it facilitate the work of framing during the shooting. As you noticed we also used them in order to have a reference of the movement of the grass. And yes, the cube was made to help us to track the shots.

cool making of. did you use standard max hair or something hairfarm? custom vray shader for hair or just standard vray material?
  • AKAMA STUDIO 2 months ago
We used hairfarm for the fur generation of the hedgehogs and the hairfarm fur shader too.

Great work, I love it! It would be really nice if you'd explain the approach behind the quill rig of the hedgehogs :). Is it some kind of fur simulation or did your animatiors and riggers write own scripts for it?
