materials: gravels, wood deck, 2 video projections, sound.
Yumi Kori transformed the inhabitant's relationship to the space by employing the video projection, sound, gravels and wood deck to create multi sensory, interactive environments.
Based on video Yumi Kori filmed during her recent residency in Brazil, the projections depict figures who appear to dissolve into light as they walk into an expansive emptiness that is both unreachable and strangely calming.
The exhibition's title, utatane, refers to a state which, in English, has no equivalent, but which could be referred to as "light or restless sleep," a pleasant dreamy state between sleep and vigil where the mind travels and is absent from the body.
Video created at the INSTITUTO SACATAR, a Brazilian non-profit international arts residency program on the island of Itaparica, Bahia, Brazil.
