3 Minutes In Beijing, 2009, 3 minutes, animation
3 Minutes In Beijing presents a rapidly transforming 3 dimensional machine that gives birth to future structures. This humourous narrative presents an ironic vision of Chinese architecture out of control. This architectural birth machine takes on qualities of a military, viral evolving cityscape. It is set first in Hong Kong and finally in Beijing, China, where I shot the cityscapes in 2009. This piece addresses the astonishing rate of transformation in the contemporary Chinese cityscapes. In a rather Eurocentric perspective, Westerners have believed that they are the center of the future, idealism, and even the creators of utopia. I was astonished, while visiting this country, at its incredible ferocious development making me question this idea of where the future is taking place. Beijing makes New York and Paris feel old fashioned.
