A lonely temporary care-giver brings home a haunting young boy whose mother has mysteriously abandoned him.
Despite her best efforts, she seems unable to get the painfully shy child to come out of his shell and he refuses even to eat while she's around him. In fact, the only thing that seems to bring him any happiness is her pet rat.
