A fractal animation made using a variety of different circle inversion properties. Animation and sound design by Howard Quin.

This is part of a bigger piece which will be performed at the Village Underground by the LCO (lcorchestra.co.uk/home.html) on May 26th/27th.

enjoy :D

Very nice! Can you share some information? Is the animation made in some plug-in, or you programmed that? And about the sound design?

    Thanks!
  • Howard Quin 10 months ago
Animation was made with Ultra fractal, C++, and final cut pro and the sound design was made with reaktor, reason, supercollider and logic pro. I just used a normal julia fractal and played around with the inverse transformations whilst tweaking the code a bit to get a different set of properties. An inversion of a fractal turns it inside out where the points that are furthest away immediately morphs to the foreground and the original center is simultaneously forced into the distance. This was achieved by specifying rates of change over the radius and center of the inversion circle. In relation with sound, I tried to link the speed at which these changes occur with the rate of synthesis effects like LFO and delay. Thats about it really. Thanks for the comment!

    Hi Howard,

Thanks for the detailed answer! I don't have the knowledge to go so deep in tweaking codes. But I enjoyed to know that it was not an easy "throw a plug-in, add keyframes and render" thing. That's the kind of process that makes a difference.

I really liked the way you synched the sound to the video. I use Reaktor too. It's an amazing program.

absolutely fantastic. i just dont get why there isnt a comparable fractal animation software for mac...

but wow, i mean wow. u win for most ecstatic animation i have ever seen. and i've seen a lot... well, actually i've seen better, but that was with my eyes closed after a cup of mushroom tea... so i guess u only win for the "made on earth" category... ;)

haha cool thanks. I definitely agree, not even the most powerful computer today can create anything remotely close to the intricate stuff you see whilst in that state. I'll give it about 8-10 years!
As for the fractal software, Artmatic pro is probably closest for the mac but i'm not really sure. I generally stick to windows for visual stuff and rely on the mac more for sound and music.

This is superb! I love this stuff. Its been many long decades since I've had a date with "Mr. Natural". Kinda takes me back. You did an outstanding job of synchronizing the audio with the visuals. Great work!

Whoaaa, trippy stuff. I don't know how you did it, but it's looking really smooth. Good stuff man!

Really like your work. Might have been more interesting if it would have played a half the speed to allow assimilation!
Only to be taken under strict supervision? No alcohol or drugs? lol ...

Thanks for the comment. I do agree that due to the amount of complex patterns it might be a bit mental but it's supposed to be the climactic point of a bigger piece containing 13 more minutes of animation. The other parts will be quite slow and eventually gather momentum over time.
No alcohol or drugs please, only acid :D

HOLY COW! That was utterly insane! Awesome stuff!
Is there anyway you may be able to re-render in HD, this would be absolutely spectacular in HD. SD just doesn't do the work justice! 10/10
  • Howard Quin 10 months ago
Thankyou, i'm glad you liked it! Yes I am thinking of replacing it with an HD version. I'm not sure if my computer can handle HD though T_T

Awesome! My math teacher is mad about fractals and she loved it too, the love is also infective. Everyone I showed it to said it was the best!

wonderful treatment... very inspiring. It was (as someone pointing out in an earlier post) fast and furious but with the audio this speed gave it all some form of quirky humor to it.

Another non-drug comparison... DMT spirit humor... very female, playful and fast. 10 stars, A++++ love and light

absolutely amazing! Definitely the most interesting fractal animation I have seen! You managed to get a real organic quality to the way everything changed and morphed together, rather than the standard constant zoom or cycling colors... brilliant!
