The language of science fiction, film, and video games is packed with words for embellishment and ornament, things that “look cool but don’t actually do anything.” Stamen’s work explores the function and effect of seemingly decorative details, showing how they can be called into the service of cleanly communicating data: To mask the limitations of a technology, suggest the otherwise undoable, impart a feeling of realism, and really tie the room together. Examples will be shown and apparently unrelated fields will be referenced.
