Echoed: when Tom released the 'Timescapes: "Death is the road to awe"' teaser 2 years ago, the EXACT same words sprung to mind only a short way into that teaser; it was obvious. Tom Lowe, you and your crew are creating what will be a worldwide jaw dropping masterpiece reflecting the beauty of the Universe and the world we live in. Thank you for bringing your vision of such beauty to the planet. May it serve as yet another reminder for us all to treat this planet and its peoples with more love and respect.

TimeScapes should surely be THE most pre-ordered film ever?

I actually don't see the purpose of using 4k resolution.. For movie theaters YES, for home movie watching.. no.
  • Adam Spence 1 month ago
I would think it's about future proofing as much as anything. Few saw television going widescreen, and yet a few directors/cinematographers framed their shows so that they could be more easily cropped in the future. 4K screens are starting to be released and while I think there a long way off, no harm in producing high res now.

First of all, this is insanely cool. Secondly- how'd you shoot the footage in the first few seconds of driving down the road at night? Long exposure or epic?

    J
  • Matthew Savile 2 months ago
Based on my own calculations and tests, all you need is to be able to hit f/1.4 and ISO 6400, and you can get away with a 1/2 sec. exposure under a full moon. Kinda like the Sunny Sixteen rule, but way geekier. Put the car in idle, at 2 AM, and let it roll!
  • At F1.4 you're not gonna get deep foccus the way he did...
  • Jon Chema plus 2 months ago
I agree. Unless you are at the infinity mark of your focus range. However, that being said- stuff that was close in the foreground would have been much more out of focus.
  • Tom Lowe pro 2 months ago
Here is some info about it, including some photos of the drivelapse rig I used to shoot the opening drivelapse. Exposure was roughly half a second, if I recall. I have a 4x4 LOW gear on my Toyota Tundra that goes really slow, which helps keep the shots stable.

  • Matthew Savile 2 months ago
Yes, it's not gonna work at 50mm or 85mm or something. You need to go as wide as possible to maximize DOF and to minimize the effects of car vibration.

If 24mm f/1.4 turns out to be too shallow, hit 14mm or 16mm f/2.8 and that might work better, although you gotta make up for the shutter speed. And you can't go much faster than a couple / few MPH.

Tom, any guesses at your shutter speeds for the moving time lapses? My friend (vimeo.com/sgphotos) and I are going to hit up J-Tree in January for some drivelapsing, and we're still just theorizing about which lenses to take and what shutter speeds we need to hit. Assuming a D700 and 5D mk2 at our disposal.

    Thanks,
    =Matt=
  • Matthew Savile 1 day ago
Just as a follow-up, for those who were asking: This is what a 5D mk2 & 24 1.4 does at ISO 6400, f/1.4, and 1/2 sec. under a full moon at 0.5 MPH: vimeo.com/36182489 (The J-tree road scenes) ...We hand-pushed a Prius with a tripod taped to the hood.

Looking forward to watching Timescapes, Tom!
