Community Beacons are a series of Kinetic Light Drums that light up when played without any batteries. The sound vibrations are converted to light allowing players to communicate over a distance, uniting and enlivening the community with rhythms of sound and light. Check out the “Making of The Community Beacons” video to see how these drums light up without batteries or external power.
This video was filmed at the 2011 Ingenuity Festival in Cleveland, Ohio. Excerpts are from the Case Western Reserve University's Percussion Ensemble's performance of Russell Peck’s (1966) “Lift-Off!” on McCormack and Figg’s “Community Beacons, Kinetic Light Drums”.
