63. Why I Go to Gawker Parties

Jakob "Fameball" Lodwick and I made our first public appearance at Nick Denton's apartment for the Gawker book launch last night.

We discussed our impressions afterwards ...

Saying that I'm friends with 95% of Gawker employees is an overstatement. But. You know. The general sentiment - I know and like a lot of them - is true.

Thinking about the tangle of bullshit you describe here really makes me depressed. In Oregon we're nice to people we like. And we're nice to most other people too. New York is in the final stages of syphilis brain damage.

Dalas, you and I must have been friends in a past life.

Your friends should be nice to you. That's what "friend" means. I've read the posts on Gawker and the mean comments and I don't think they should post such stuff up if they know their audience is going to be so cruel. At some level, it's got to hurt your feelings.

The look at 1:11, "I think she genuinely doesn't like you", it's tell-tale. Yeah, I guess that *could* be a reason :)

I have a strange issue with Gawker. I think most of the content that comes from them is shit but they do have some good people working for them. Like ValleyWag, a lot of trashy writing, but some good and creative people writing.

Although, I think we can all agree that Brian Lam is an unprofessional idiot.

Is there some sort of divide between Gawker in New York and Gawker everywhere else?

julia -- i knew about you via gawker before anything else (i read your column in amny but didn't know that was you until it was pointed out to me). and seeing you via video has really made you more likeable (to me, at least, but i'll guess to many others as well). just thought i'd point that out. vimeo adds a nice counterpoint to everything they write about you on gawker. (p.s. i love la esquina. yuuuuummmmm).

At what point is the public and private, in your lives tradeable?...i.e. you are both commodities and as such are subject to the tide and time of comment and or abuse. Your both smart and savvy, I can see why you provide food for the content chefs, cutting up gossip, inuendo and general muck to provide internet babble. Your on top of it tho, Jacobs smile is tefflon coated..who ever much he looks like a serial killer.

Why is it when the bit players in the very industry they make their livelihood on have the camera turned on themselves (by themselves, no less!), get all upset when they're used like the same pop culture chew toy they play with on a daily basis?
