A friend asked if I could make something like this so I decided to create a proof of concept.

The map is an editable vector image that I modified in Illustrator with a path then took into After Effects and worked a little magic so that the path appears to draw itself. Not going to get into details but the method used is the same as the graffiti writing tutorial found here:
