50. Matthew Dear - "Headcage" Video Edit
Matthew Dear's latest audio/video excursion combines the upbeat title track from his new 'Headcage EP' with mesmerizing abstraction from London-based director Morgan Beringer. The upbeat future-pop and signature Dear croon of "Headcage" meet shifting quasi-geological patterns, which eventually morph into hazy, near-perceptible flashes. Certainly a turn towards the light, following Dear's work for 2010's 'Black City.' 2012 will see a new full-length from Matthew.

amazing! could someone tell me what software morgan used - stellar work. its not after effects is it?
  • chris hamilton plus 1 month ago
Yes it's probably after effects. Lot's of matte work, probably shot some fluids with a camera to create displacement maps to combine with images.

I was thinking exactly the same thing. It almost feels like he shot some fluids also to use as track mattes for revealing other layers. Cool shit nonetheless, love the morphing.

  • Incrredible work from Mr. Beringer again.
And excited about the upcoming Matthew Dear album, which hopefully means another live tour as I missed his LA stop for Black City.

    As for the video...
Just trying to deconstruct it is liable to give me a headache. Curious about whether it's an AE plugin I'm not familiar with.
Also, I know that you can apply filters to video in Photoshop, and there are some filters there that can get you some of the looks, but the keyframing here looks much more purposeful than anything I can probably get from Photoshop.

    Nonetheless, great stuff!

losing count of the many times I watched the video, it is a Masterpiece! I'd also like very much to know how it was made.
