23. The Purity Myth Trailer
Produced & Distributed by the Media Education Foundation
Featuring Jessica Valenti

In this video adaptation of her bestselling book, pioneering feminist blogger Jessica Valenti trains her sights on "the virginity movement" -- an unholy alliance of evangelical Christians, right-wing politicians, and conservative policy intellectuals who have been exploiting irrational fears about women's sexuality to roll back women's rights. From dad-and-daughter "purity balls," taxpayer-funded abstinence-only curricula, and political attacks on Planned Parenthood, to recent attempts by legislators to de-fund women's reproductive health care and narrow the legal definition of rape, Valenti identifies a single, unifying assumption: the myth that the worth of a woman depends on what she does -- or does not do -- sexually. In the end, Valenti argues that the health and well-being of women are too important to be left to ideologues bent on vilifying feminism and undermining women's autonomy.

I love how you found an abstinence counselor who appears to deny his latent sexuality for the the close of the clip.

Painful to watch but the material is poignantly relevant.

Either extreme is bad. It's hard to find a balance, and what works for one will sometimes squash another. The reason for marriage is to protect the hearts of the people involved. Sex is good. Faithfulness is good. People need to embrace their sexuality when they do find someone they love and also loves them. In Biblical law when two people had sex before marriage because they 'couldn't wait' officially they were then 'married'. That settled it. The rules were there to protect people. So the people would be thinking of the other person's welfare. It's just the pain of abandonment and heartache if someone doesn't love you back that's the real issue. Don't hurt each other. That's the golden rule.

I truly believe 99% of right wing social policy is based on a deep fear of their own genitalia. Great trailer on a great topic. I would watch this as a doc in a heartbeat. Keep fighting the good fight against extremism.
