On November 2, 2011 #occupyoakland called for a General Strike and for the closure of the Port of Oakland. That day, a number of local Food Justice organizations convened at Oscar Grant Plaza, the home of the #occupyoakland encampment, to host a Food Justice Teach In/Eat In. By reaching out to the broader Occupy Movement, these organizations are encouraging others to Occupy the Food System!
During the Teach In/Eat In, author Christopher Cook painted a picture of the inequalities of the industrial food system, highlighted organizations fighting for and creating a more just food system, and suggested actions moving forward.
Organizations involved included Planting Justice, Pesticide Action Network, Food & Water Watch, Californians for Pesticide Reform, Pesticide Watch, Rooted in Community, Bay Localize, People's Grocery, SPROUT Seed Library, Food First, and the California Food and Justice Coalition.
