Brilliant, I loved it. I shared it on my science blog and wrote an article concerning it, if you'd like to read astronasty.blogspot.com/2011/12/lecture-on-lolspeak-effects-of-stark.html

Cool video, but if you would do this lecture again, please correct there two things
    1. 1337 speak started way before online gaming, it was in 80s, people were using it to avoid word filters, so they could swear and talk about hacking and cracking on internet chats.
    2. lolcats didn't start on icanhascheezburger, before that they were popular on 4chan.org /b/ board, where they were posted on Saturday and people were calling it Caturday

Hi Vol Jang - Thanks for the comments. Jill and I know about Caturday on /b/ - it's just that we only had 20 minutes and a room full of n00bs so we could only introduce them to the basics. When we write up a longer article we'll hopefully have more space to include more on the origins of LOLcats and the complex link with l337.

Vol & Lauren: I would dispute that hypothesized origin for leet. I think it is a just-so story. I was involved in the hacker underground in the early 80s. Most of my use of computer systems was private phreak/hacker BBS where forbidden topics were encouraged. Misspellings like "K00L" and "FONE" were the norm. I believe there was no purpose except they were fun and identified you as a member of the community.

    Great talk, BTW

Hmm... much that could have been said, not a lot that had been said, and not to much content of an actual scientific interest.
