Commissioned by BP, Gilimbaa was tasked with the role of creating a documentary that revealed the community and corporate collaboration that brought about the creation of Opal fuel – a fuel free from sniffable and addictive hydrocarbons.
The Opal Story shares the journey of the creation of Opal fuel, the town of Papunya and their fight to preserve their community and culture once held to ransom by the effects of petrol sniffing. The story follows the people who were pivotal in the development of Opal, now in its tenth year of production, which has lead to a 98% reduction of petrol sniffing in affected communities.
Written, produced and created by Gilimbaa, this would not have been complete without the additional talent of Adam Sebastian West - Cinematography, Davros - Director, and the ever patient assistance of Alt-Fx in post-production.
To the men, women and children of Papunya - thank you for your warm welcome, sharing your incredible story and showing us around your unforgettable country.
