October 7, 2007

The Chicago Marathon came to an abrupt end due to record breaking heat, not enough water or gatorade, overwhelmed volunteer staff, and an inadequate amount medical emergency staff.

It was sad state of affairs.

I just noticed a typo in my video. I'm tired. sorry!

Wow. Good story telling. I can tell you are disappointed. It was crazy hot today. I was out in it.
  • loonachic plus 2 years ago
yeah. the heat was insane. i knew it was going to be rough from the start. thick air is not good running conditions. by mile 6 i was steaming.

how can someone run with all that entertainment? I would just want to stop and watch everything.
  • loonachic plus 2 years ago
the entertainment is the best part!

the spectators make it fun too. so many funny signs, and shouts. it's a load of laughs. :-)

what a damn shame.... even more tragic that someone died in the midst of it.... I hope, Michelle, that you will try again in the future...you would've made it this time if it hadn't been for that...

    thanks, scruffster!

    First off well done!
second I steped outside this morning and Immediately thought of you it was way to warm for this , great clip also,
  • loonachic plus 2 years ago
oh man. it was steaming out there. the temps mixed with body heat and the heat reflecting off of the asphalt made is incredibly hot.

I was thinking about you today while I was on my way to hang out with friends. It was hot as satan's ass crack, and it's FUCKING OCTOBER.

Uh, global warming is fucking real.

"Today is the marathon, and if it's this fucking nasty here, Michelle must be DYIN' running in chicago."
  • loonachic plus 2 years ago
thanks for thinking of me, pam! i wasn't dying, but unfortunately someone else was.

    :-(

oh man... I didn't even stop to think about that. gosh that was poor taste, I'm sorry.

Someone already said it great story telling, I love how you put this together.
  • loonachic plus 2 years ago
Thanks CTD3. it was a natural chain of events. I wish I would have recorded more, but I was so shocked at all of the things going on around me, i forgot!

If i'm ever in a strange situation like this again, i will focus more. way more.

i carry my camera with me everywhere. even to the supermarket. it's becoming a habit now.

    -)

oh man... i am so sorry for you (and all the other runners). the fact that you put this together very well won't chear you up now i guess.
but there will always be a next marathon, i am sure you will run many in your life, without such a drama.

What the hell! I'm pissed about this... what a travesty. The race organizers can't watch the freakin weather report?

Thanks for the video; wouldn't have known about it otherwise. :/
  • loonachic plus 2 years ago
    you're welcome, paul.

the media is saying they stopped the race because of the heat, but the runners on the course know why the race was stopped.

they ran out of water and gatorade!

we're thinking it's because the heat was so intense that runners were drinking more water than expected. some witnessed runners grabbing water jugs and dousing themselves over the head instead of using the water for other runners to hydrate with.

either way... it was a planning disaster.

then, once all these peopel started dropping like flies, it put a major strain on the emergency medical units. i was seeing ambulances from towns 40 miles west of chicago. that's when i knew it was really serious.

there were many other problems, but it would take me a while to list them.

Hey! Don't you be down!! You did the race, you didn't give up, you weren't one of the people that dropped, you would have absolutely completed the race if it hadn't been for the freak weather. You've done amazingly through this whole thing and the entire Vimeo community is so proud of you! You're awesome! :D

Wow that's beyond being a bummer. All that work.

How hot did it get? I can't stand "sitting" in 80 degree weather. I can't imagine running in it either. Biking sure, because there's at least a breeze but running, insane.

That blows my mind you made it past mile 20!
  • loonachic plus 2 years ago
    hi ian,

they say it got to 90 degrees on the course in some places. i'm guessing that, coupled with body heat, and the heat bouncing off of the asphalt made the conditions extremely unsafe.

I did make it past mile 20! The heat was suffocating, but I thought the safest thing to do was to stop. there wasn't enough water/gatorade to keep us as hydrated as we needed to be.

  • Si plus 2 years ago
Shit! I didn't see this before I posted on your previous vid - sorry! Man, that sucks. Still, I think you did incredibly well to get as far as you did in that kind of heat, and you seemed like you were raring to get to the end! You are an absolute winner in my books, and that medal is totally deserved.
  • Si plus 2 years ago
What I mean is: I think it the medal means a lot more than it does to you right now.
  • loonachic plus 2 years ago
    Thanks, Si!

wanna run next year's marathon with me?

    ;-)

    Thanks Capucha!

I think I'm gong to send the medal to my mom. she'll get a kick out of it.

Congrats on finishing! It was rather warm up here in the Cities, and thought that it had to have been warmer there in Chicago. Can't believe that they were so unprepared! Did Sue make it alright? Well, now that you've run in this heat, you could do a marathon in almost any condition and enjoy it!
  • loonachic plus 2 years ago
    thanks, ben!

sue made it across the finish line in a little over six hours. we lost each other at mile nine. when they stopped the race, they re routed some of us to an alternate route back to the finish line. i'm now learning that others were told to stay yhe course and walk the rest of the way. she was in the pack that was made to stay the course. poor thing.

after running that far, walking that distance is torture. your muscles tighten up and it becomes very uncomfortable. i think it's harder than running at that point.

    what a mess!

Wow!!! That was amazing...has that ever happened before?

Glad to see you made it through OK...

    Oh and one other thing:

"Go, Go, Go Mr. Testicles!!!"...Did somebody tell Mr. Testicles to stop running...I fear he may STILL be running.
  • loonachic plus 2 years ago
    hi eric,

no. this has never happened before.

I fear that mr. testicles is still running too. poor guy.
  • dunno 2 years ago
In that kind of heat it's a surprise he wasn't stuck to someone's leg.

After all those weeks of training! You know the city had plenty of time to prepare properly for this marathon. No excuses - it is lame. I doubt that was very enjoyable being told it was over. But it was a hot muther f'er for sure!

  • Buck Flashroy 2 years ago
Oh man! That's really harsh. Well done on getting as far as you did though, I think we're all really proud of you, to see how you trained and how far you got. Nothing you could do about what happened in the end I guess, but well done for doing what you did. I'm still very impressed.

holy shit. i've ran 5 marathons and it's such an emotional and physical experience that i cant imagine what it would be like to:

    A. run with a camera

    B. run in heat that intense, and

    C. have the fucking thing called off!

it's like telling you to stop having sex and go home. WHAT?! i know exactly what you mean about walking after running, i cant believe they made people do that! congratulations on your dedication and we're all glad you didnt get hurt. :)
  • loonachic plus 2 years ago
it was an intense day all the way around.

i love running withmy camera. :-)

when they called it off, i was so pissed that i laughed. then i got concerned. there were so many people passing out on the course. there were bodies all over the place just lying down. it was nuts.

    and walking....ooooh..that was rough.

  • Hey, Michelle...AWESOME job!!!! Holy crap...the fact that you trained, went out there, finished the race despite everything, and got your medal AND filmed it for us is just so cool.

You completely came through on your end of the deal. What happens outside of your control is...well...outside of your control.

Sorry we didn't find each other, but it's good to know that you were okay.

    Congratulations on an amazing feat.

    Really.

Holy Crap! I put this in my 'to watch' folder, and just now realized that I had left it there for a month without watching it.

Anyway, congrats on finishing your first marathon; bummer about everything else. :-( But I hope you get to a point where you can enjoy what you accomplished.

Also, I wanted to watch your CNN version of the clip, but alas it is protected. :-(

From a cinematic perspective this is an excellent documentary. I particularly like the way you emphasized the points you wanted to make by freezing the frame and overlaying the text -- very effective. I would have to say that this film captured the essence of the drama of the race -- even before it turned bad -- using an economical but enthralling first person "point of view" technique. Very well done!
