This was really amazing guys! Great song and fantastic Color Correct! Awesome that you were able to do it with so little cash. The actual value of this video is way higher!

Good work! Happy to see a great video for a great band! The Darcys put my band up at their place on the road and for that I am forever a fan!

Great video and on such a small budget thats crazy. Did I miss something or were they leaving their kid to die with their mom? Haha, maybe I just don't have enough depth
  • Mike Portoghese plus 2 months ago
Thanks Tim. The couple with the baby girl, tucked her into bed, and accepted that they're toast.

The teens that tried to flee are entirely different people.

What's with the District 9 ships? That's what they look like to me. Nice story though.

    i second that
  • Mike Portoghese plus 2 months ago
Agreed. The escape ships ended up way more D9 than I had planned.

Bad ass!! What cam/lens kit were you using. Unbelievable work. Looks like a budget 10x that.
  • Mike Portoghese plus 2 months ago
Thanks. The scenes with the teenagers were shot with a 5D + Zeis primes and a great DP. The rest of the video I just shot myself (I'm no DP) on my 60D with a Canon 50mm 1.8, and only really using existing light.

beautiful, one question! Did you make this light transitions by yourself or you buy it somewhere.. Or where we get those! THX in advance
  • Mike Portoghese plus 2 months ago
Thanks Ivan, it's a combination of the heads and tails from footage I shot on 35mm years ago, some stock footage, but most of the flickers are done manually in After Effects with a softened/tinted lens flare at each side of the frame animated to flicker on and off and then the blending mode set to 'color dodge'... very simple.
  • Carlos Eduardo Faria plus 2 months ago
That's really awesome! I always wanted to know how to do those "film burns" effects Did you use 60p in all of your shots?
  • Mike Portoghese plus 2 months ago
Most of the video was 60p except the wide outdoor plates. I went 1080 for those b/c my cheap canon lens doesn't capture much detail on a hazed out cityscape, so I needed maximum res to work with.
  • IVAN PEREZA 2 months ago
Thanx Mike!!! Now I got to go find some 35mm camera for the transition ;) THX again :) very very nice
  • Carlos Eduardo Faria plus 2 months ago
Oh, forgot to ask... Did you use any kind of pre-setting like CineStyle?
  • Carlos Eduardo Faria plus 2 months ago
I'm asking because the colors are great. And cinetyle gives you some space in the post. Sorry for so many questions. But did you use a Glidecam for some shots?
  • Mike Portoghese plus 2 months ago
Yes, we used the cinestyle setting, it was awesome for the indoor stuff ... but made the outdoor stuff too washed out. The colour was all just curves + hls + glow in After Effects. No glidecam, just a handheld 60D.
  • Carlos Eduardo Faria plus 2 months ago
Thanks man! That really helps. But you guys used a 60D and 5D only or with all those accessories like follow focus, mattebox, filters, etc? That's all. Thanks!
  • Mike Portoghese plus 2 months ago
The DP who shot the teenagers/outdoor scenes, used a redrock + follow focus for the cinema primes. It was a fairly modest setup. The rest of the video was just me holding my 60D handheld, or on a tripod. It was extraordinarily un-sexy.

    Very cool!
One question: Was those aliens from Canada or something? I recognized the logo on the spacecraft's!
Otherwise, very cool! I liked the specialeffects and all about it!
  • Mike Portoghese plus 2 months ago
I'd hoped the flags on the different escape-ships would have indicated that they weren't in fact aliens.... despite being led to think so for most of the video.

That was awesome! Thanks for posting the details on the other comments. If you don't mind me asking what kind of time frame was this started and completed in? Its very encouraging to see that done on that budget! Thanks for sharing it with us!
  • Mike Portoghese plus 2 months ago
The video was shot on 2 separate days. One for the teens + extras. Another for the family + baby, and outdoor plates. Post was spread out over a month, because I had other things to juggle. The edit took longer than the effects b/c it was tricky cramming that much story into that little song... and having it flow.
  • Sparks Bros Media plus 2 months ago
Well like I said Mike. Great job! You told a great story very quickly. Please when you have some time please check out some of my videos. I'd like to do more stuff like what your doing someday.

Nice eye candy, but to be honest, the pessimistic armageddon thing is getting REALLY old. I'd love to see all this creative energy put into something with a more evolved vision of human destiny. Nice work none the less!
