Dang. Brilliant framing, lighting, and sound guys! I especially like the penultimate scene with the shootout. The shot where the assassin walks away leaving the kid is amazing!

Great use of sound in the film too. Too many people forget about the use of silence and subtle sound cues.

This is by far the sharpest DSLR footage I've ever seen online...how did you get it so sharp? Post or in Camera? Great story, sound and cinematography!!
  • Chris Vink 2 months ago
My thoughts exactly. The sharpness is simply amazing! And a great short! (Especially) the lighting was brilliant.
  • Andrew Gordon 2 months ago
In camera sharpening zero, unsharp mask in AE amount 50 radius 0.6, and replacing the bg in shots with stills wherever possible to increase res and DR.

    Totally captivating!! Extraordinary work!

"...replacing the bg in shots with stills wherever possible to increase res and DR"
Wow! How on earth did you do that? Presumably you can only do that in static shots, when the camera's not moving? Sounds like a HUGE amount of work, though.

absolutley beautiful, however i thought the shots in the first sequence weren't contrasty enough considering the subject matter... :) jus a thought... in my opinion a visually stronger image at the beginning would have made the flashback have a deeper effect (it wud feel lighter and a time of happinesss with the boy running around) not sure if this makes sense hahaha :) aweome short tho.. where r u guys from? and where was this shot?
  • Hi Ron, really appreciate your comments! Fair point on differentiating between the present and the flashbacks too! The film was entirely made in our hometown of Perth, Western Australia. The main location, including the theatre, was an old disused metal asylum. Thanks again.

    Cheers
  • Jamie Gallant 2 months ago
I'd also love to know what you used for audio, specifically in the opening interview. Sounded fantastic!
  • Triggershortfilm.com plus 2 months ago
Hi Jamie and others enquiring about sound. Thanks for your kind words. Apologies, the film was completed in early 2010 and as such I can't remember the mic/recorder set up. However, I can confirm that all dialogue in the opening sequence was recorded as ADR using a USB powered Rode mic, directly onto a laptop.

Again, many thanks for checking out the film!

I have never seen a short film with the same quality as good fulllength movies but this one exeeds most and gets a top ranking from me.
I had hopes for a catchyer ending and a little deeper story but nevertheless it was great.

    Very artistic and real.

    The filming,
    the storytelling
    and the sound design
    is spectacular!

Who made the music in the outro?

    Grats and thanks!
  • Triggershortfilm.com plus 2 months ago
Elias, sincere thanks for checking out the film and for your thoughtful comments. The entire score, including the outro, was composed by the very talented Lucky Oceans - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lucky_Oceans. The socre was edited by the equally talented Steve Richter - rhythmbread.com/about/steve/steverichter.php

Fantastic use of locations, casting, natural light, camera movement, sound -- loved the entire film. But also love the time-lapse credit sequence at the end. May I ask how you achieved those shots? Was it a motion control slider? Did you use any type of app to help you calculate which direction the sun would be traveling? How many days did you spend shooting those plates? If you have time to answer I'd really love to know. Thanks for a great film!
  • Andrew Gordon 2 months ago
Hi John. The timelapse sequences were static shots projected onto 3D geometry to fake the camera moves. Educated guess where the sun was going to be. Done over a couple of days, probably 8 hours total. Two of the shots were real camera moves done with a geared down lego motor pushing the dolly.
  • Thanks for watching John! If you haven't see it already, there is a brief section on the time-lapse credits sequence towards the end of the MAKING TRIGGER featurette - vimeo.com/33707719

Beautiful. It's rare for an action short to be so emotional.

  • This is incredible work. I loved it and have shared it with others. My father's interpretation was that the boy actually represents the main character in his youth. Is there any validity to that interpretation or is the film meant to be seen as literal?

Great work to the whole crew.
  • Cheers BBV! Really appreciate the kind words and yes, your father's interpretations are definitely valid... bang on in fact! Thanks for sharing the film on.

  • Hi there people of Vimeo, on behalf of the entire cast and crew I just want to sincerely thank you all for taking the time to watch TRIGGER and for commenting. Honestly, we uploaded the film to Vimeo primarily because we were getting tired of handing out DVD copies! The positive reception that the film has received from the Vimeo Community has been very unexpected, truly awe-inspiring and quite frankly, faith restoring! Again, thank you so much. We can't wait to bring you all another production in the future.
