shot on pre production unit of the new Canon EOS C300 camera

guy in a tram finds a pack of cigarettes and realizes that it's not a usual brand...

I wrote the first script of this short propably 5min after Canon Germany called me to confirm they will send me a pre production unit of the new Canon C300. I wanted to get my hands on it since Nov 3rd and was glad they'd send me the camera.

I called Nino Leitner who was on that "Pre-Pro-User"-List because I wanted to shoot a short with him depending on who gets it first. So we continued our plans to shoot in Vienna, packed the gear, called friends and colleagues, got to Vienna and started shooting from Saturday to Sunday.
After 15-16 hours, we wrapped our shoot and were pretty happy how it turned out, even if it was WAY too short to get everything like we want it to be.

Our main goal was to test the camera in a "real" production environment. I love cameras that don't stand in the way. A camera is great if it doesn't force you to make compromises. If you want to be creative, you don't want to think of camera flaws, quirks or even battery life.

We really enjoyed shooting with it and realized that it's the best camera for our current needs. Again, for us, not for everyone.

this was our schedule:
Wednesday: Canon called
Thursday: Pre-Production (script, actors, locations)
Friday: first test shots and further planning
Saturday / Sunday: shooting
Monday-Wednesday: Post-Production

Enjoy watching it!

**UPDATE: a few people asked if it would look more filmic if I would have done more grading. I did grade it a bit but only some contrast and nothing else. I didn't want it to look oversaturated or with high contrast. Will give it to a colorist for grading and upload 2 different ones, with and without grading.

**UPDATE 2: new grading is up from Micha Schmidt!

Great job guys - enjoyed the narrative, better than watching traditional camera tests. I like the quality of the highlights and how they seemed to roll off. How far did you guys push the ISO for some of the night scenes. I noticed some of the noise and was wondering how far camera was pushed.
  • Nino Leitner plus 2 months ago
Many of the night shots (e.g. the one on the mountain at the end or the refinery shots with the lights in the background) were shot at 20,000 ISO.
  • Kevin Ritchie plus 2 months ago
Wow - that is crazy - 20,000 sounds so high - I wouldn't have guessed that by the noise present. Good to know - camera must be pretty clean at 1250, 3200 or even 6400 ISO
  • Felix Wittich 2 months ago
Native ISO is around 850, I think...
  • Amila C. Kumarasinghe 2 months ago
    Yes 850

  • Kevin Ritchie plus 2 months ago
Great FX by the way. Did you edit in the native XF codec or did you transcode out to ProRes?
  • Mario Feil 2 months ago
I transcoded to ProRes for working in FCP7. Wanted to try Premiere too because it supports MXF natively. Transcoded VERY fast though. Faster than I was able to go through the footage :)
  • Kevin Ritchie plus 2 months ago
Did you transcode in Compressor or did you use FCP's log and transfer?

Nice work guys! Has a really nice look, particularly highlights + skin tones. Did you use much for lighting during the day ?
  • Nino Leitner plus 2 months ago
I agree, the roll-off of highlights and on skin tones is extremely detailed and doesn't look electronic.

We never used any additional lighting, except for a tiny Litpanel Micro in one or two of the night shots and I think an iPhone up on the mountain in front of the panorama :)

  • Chris 2 months ago
Nice work! You guys are fast!

Having had a chance to check the camera out for about an hour, I thought the system as a whole was very familiar. It is a Canon...Right?

This camera is going to be a great transition point for Canon DSLR users.
  • Bellographix 2 months ago
Keep in mind it's about $12,000 more than a 5D, so it might be kinda difficult for people to step up to this camera. Nevertheless, the C300 is something to talk about.
  • Mario Feil 2 months ago
of course it's much more than a 5D and I really hope Canon will drop the price a bit more. At the end, it's not a DSLR, it's a camera with proper video functions and it really will make my life easier on set as a DOP. Plus: good enough for TV work (DSLRs are just sometimes good enough which is a bummer)

As I have been guilty of doing it myself, I thought the credits were too long. Almost a 1m:30s is long when the main story is under 4 minutes. But I really enjoyed the story, and all the work put into creating it. Very original, beautiful cinematography. Looking forward to more.
  • Mario Feil 2 months ago
thanks Peter. Agreed, but after all, you could just hit stop, so I thought they are ok :)

  • Veronica Alice plus 2 months ago
Wow, great work, excellent story - I'm sure that must have been some tight focus pulling in the court yard - great descent into the cameras low light capabilities. Awesome all round!
  • Mario Feil 2 months ago
thanks Veronica. Alois (our 1st AC) managed to keep almost everything in focus. The blurry parts are just Nino Leitner's style :-)

  • Frank Glencairn 2 months ago
Great job guys, love the skin tones and the way it handles highlights, especially the roll-off. You shot in LOG I guess?
  • Mario Feil 2 months ago
yup, Canon Log but it's not that flat as I expected. Not comparable to Loc-C (Alexa) or S-Log (Sony) I guess, but I didn't have a chance to put them side by side. Others will propably test it soon

nice, this should be posted in C300 user group as well.
  •
  • Sanjin Jukic pro 2 months ago
    Very nice!!!
But also I found that @ ISO 20.000 was a kind of bleeding edge and it's mostly unusable for any sort of serious work.
I mean Vienna panorama from the hill was not like Los Angeles at night (and Vienna obviously missing more city lights). Too much noise that needs effective denoise treatment in post.
    One more thing quote:
"A Camera Does Not a Filmmaker Make"!!!
    freshdv.com/2011/04/a-camera-does-not-a-filmmaker-make.html
  • Mario Feil 2 months ago
the best camera is simply the one that lets us be creative. The C300 did. We didn't have to worry, it simply worked fine. And yes, ISO 20000 (=6400 on 1Dmk4) is the bleeding edge but it's usable. Haven't tested denoiser plugins but I was surprised at how organic it looks. Much better than colorful DSLR gain. Will try to put some comparison shots together (1D - C300 - F3)
  • Sanjin Jukic pro 2 months ago
    Thanks Mario.
Don't worry too much about a kind of "toasting" critics even mine one at the end. Just go your own way....
  • Mario Feil 2 months ago
Critics are good! without critics, we won't ever get better :)
  •
  • Adam Barton plus 2 months ago
and the moral of the story is.....don't smoke camels!
nice test, nice to see some narrative going on......my only gripe is when u shoot a story, its a can of worms, u need more story, more story, not enough going on here, but it wasn't really your objective, so bloody well done........
  • Nino Leitner plus 2 months ago
Well yeah, we didn't set out to create a narrative masterpiece, but at least some narrative ... Bored by ordinary collections of "nice" shots
  • Mario Feil 2 months ago
.. teleporting causes health problems ... sure, we could have developed the story way better but you know how much time you need to get everything together :)
  • Adam Barton plus 2 months ago
Guys, you've got a groovy little test going on here, and I tend to agree with your ethos: at least it isn't a collection of random stuff on a timeline. I was just giving you my honest reaction to the material.

also my name is KEMALETTIN not kermalettin
  • Philip Bloom pro 2 months ago

  • Joe Simon Films plus 2 months ago
Call 'em out Phillip, these trolls are ridiculous
  • peter jeno 2 months ago
No trolls. But in film class, we wouldn't just pat each other on the back, but also would give our input of things that we would change. Granted, it would usually be done with a little more tact than can sometimes be read here; you don't want to step on toes.
  • Jesse Brauning plus 2 months ago
Okay, but a proper critique would be "Hi, I thought that the focus pulling wasn't as good as it could have been - I thought it needed to be more precise". Hire a real focus puller next time is rude and unhelpful."
  • Kemalettin Sert 2 months ago
yes sorry for that..im changing it to
''Hi, I thought that the focus pulling wasn't as good as it could have been ''

its ok now? hope everyone is happy

Impressive results considering the very short time frame!

    So are you sold Mario?

  • Mario Feil 2 months ago
thanks Philip! Yup, I'm sold. I really needed to work with it to appreciate all the nice features. Testing it in a "real" production environment helped a lot
  • Nino Leitner plus 2 months ago
Thanks Philip! Really looking forward to your thoughts on the C300 as well and what you shoot with it. Will you do some comparison to low light with F3 with and without S-Log?

Really Impressed how fast your rolled everything up with this, nice team work.

Sadly (for Canon) the thing I'm digging the most is the music, Cedric did a really good job. It remained me at some point the TRON LEGACY OST by Daft Punk. I guess it's because both are french??

Hi guys, and congrats for the nice work : Bravo !

The narrative loop (returning back to the bus) reminds me of the story "Mobius" from Vincent Laforet, also shot with the C300. Will become a trend in shorts ?... ;-)

Anyway, what's the font used for end credits ?
    Thanks.
  • Nino Leitner plus 2 months ago
This has to be answered by Mario who had the idea, but yes, it was intentional to have a reference to Möbius in there!
  • Mario Feil 2 months ago
yes, it's a bit similar to Möbius, though I wanted to let my main actor live so it has a happy end :)

Great job guys. It's really a nice idea to test this camera by shooting a narrative piece. I'd love to get this camera - maybe slightly out of my price range though! Just a quick question regarding audio - the controls are all manual if I'm not wrong? How was it riding the levels whilst shooting? To have a camera with easy to use XLR inputs makes such a big difference when on location, i.e Streets of Vienna! Great work with the film, really enjoyed it. (Ed Beck, MB Films)
  • Nino Leitner plus 2 months ago
The XLR and manual audio controls are a breeze to work with, just like with most professional cameras!
  • MB Films plus 2 months ago
Thx Nino. Canon C300 keeps getting better!!

  • Mario Feil 2 months ago
by the way, I didn't want to grade it heavily. If anyone wants to do the grading on this, I could maybe provide the edit w/o any color correction done. Simply the Canon Log files cut together. If not, I will leave it as it is :-)
  • Jesse Brauning plus 2 months ago
Oh man I'd love that. I just downloaded the beta of Resolve for Windows and this would be a great way to try it out.
