Smash, Crumble and Grind (Chalk Dress) is a six-day process-based performance exploring detachment, resolve, and release. During the performance L. Mylott Manning wears a dress made from 56 bunny shaped chalk pieces and cuts free squares of black fabric from her garment. She rubs the chalk into powder creating drawings on the fabric and hangs them on a wall to form a layered installation. By removing pieces worn on her body and transforming them into dust, it is Manning’s intent to represent the surfacing of inward thoughts, filtering experience and disseminating burdens.
