Quickbite makes it easier and faster to add bookmarks to Del.icio.us along the lines of the Instapaper read later bookmarklet. This screencast shows the quick install and config of Quickbite and then it in action.

Best in HD.

Quickbite is available at: github.com/garrettmurray/quickbite

How'd you throw breakers in the Bookmarks bar?
  • garrettmurray plus 9 months ago
They're just simple bookmarks. I set the address to about:blank and use the pipe as the name. I just duplicate them and use them wherever I want some space.

Booya! Delicious has always been just a teensy bit too much to use regularly.

And damn I'm glad it was in HD!

what a coincidence. I was doing the same thing yesterday as I was moving from Firefox to Safari to replace an extension. Mine instead, autotags the bookmarks through some simple javascript pulled from a greasemonkey script and a reworking of Lazy Sheep, ejohn.org/apps/sheep/
  • garrettmurray plus 9 months ago
Is yours available anywhere? I'm curious what kind of auto-tagging you're doing (and how it's deciding on what tags should be used)...
  • Aaron Lidman 9 months ago
Not yet, still working on it a bit.
Here's the js that does the tagging userscripts.org/scripts/source/31918.user.js

I was just trying to remake a working version of Lazy Sheep (it stopped working a few years ago) that autotags.
  • garrettmurray plus 9 months ago
Oh, it's based on Lazy Sheep. Gotcha. So it's looking at the public tags on del.icio.us that others have added to the URL if it has been bookmarked before.

I considered that, but realized that I don't like the idea of assuming other people are tagging things correctly. But it might be useful, so maybe I should reconsider.

That being said, it would also increase loading time (although I'm not sure by how much, since I didn't get Lazy Sheep to work for me).

Yeah, I've been skeptical about the autotagging too but after using it in Firefox for the past few months it works great.

That's really great, and I'd use it without hesitation if I didn't enjoy Pukka so much:

Hey, don't know how to contact you other than here. I get this error after uploading:

Parse error: syntax error, unexpected T_STRING, expecting T_OLD_FUNCTION or T_FUNCTION or T_VAR or '}' in /myserver/bookmarklet/lib/quickbite.php on line 50

    what could I do?
  • garrettmurray plus 9 months ago
Sounds like you're using PHP4 and Quickbite requires PHP5.
  •
  • Holger Frohloff 9 months ago
ah thank you. alright now I know what to fix :)
  • garrettmurray plus 9 months ago
It would also be possible to tweak this script to work with PHP4, you'd just have to do a bit of work. Although PHP5 is pretty standard now...

When I click the bookmarklet, everything works fine, except the page that I was bookmarking goes blank and then prints this: [object Window]. If I hit the Back button, I get back to the page. Thoughts?
  • garrettmurray plus 9 months ago
Whoa. Weird. Do me a favor and email me the browser you're using and any other details (garrett at maniacalrage dot net). Thanks!
  • Evan Sims 9 months ago
Yeah, I'm having the same issue. I'll pop a bug report too.
  • garrettmurray plus 9 months ago
I've fixed this in the code, but you can just add void(0); to the end of the bookmarklet code and that will solve your problems.
  • Mike Mella 9 months ago
    Works now. Thanks a lot.

EDIT: Durp, I see you've already answered this.

For some reason I keep getting an error with my quickbite configuration:

Parse error: syntax error, unexpected T_STRING, expecting T_OLD_FUNCTION or T_FUNCTION or T_VAR or '}' in /quickbite/lib/quickbite.php on line 50

    Am I doing something wrong?
