It's funny the way you found out about the theme of the book.
The writers are Dutch and there is a sequel called "King & King & Family", in which the two kings adopt and raise an orphaned girl who is raised as a princess.
There is also a play for children about these books. I know it played in several countries in Europe.
There was a lawsuit about the use of this book in a public school in Massachusetts. The judge dismissed it.
If I had children I would also read it to them.
yeah, I thought about that when I posted it, the first part of the video makes it sound like I wasn't cool with it. Glad to see people watched the whole thing.
I, like TDS, was almost ready to be disappointed thinking that you would speak against the content of the book. I'm glad I watched the entire video, though.
It's always a good day when you learn that you have another ally. :)
To be completely honest, I thought the same thing.. except that you would call the book "gay" in the "..it's stupid" gay. You know how people use "gay" that way sometimes? But yeah, I was totally pleasantly surprised as well :-)
And to put my reaction to the book.. I totally love that someone would make a book like this for kids. It is not explicit at all.. and from what you've shown us of it, it looks very cute! The kiss with the little heart.. Aww!
Not only would I definitely read this to Kayleigh, but I will actually be keeping my eye out for it when we go to the library! I love the whole concept of people just celebrating love, whatever shape/color/form it comes in. Love is Love, and that's all that matters. Thanks for sharing this. <3
Gotta give you props for having a rational response to this book with your kids. I think that things are going to be different in the future, because the people in our generation are raising our kids with less prejudice and more understanding
Hi, I'm new here on Vimeo, but I just wanted to say that your video made me really happy! I like that you just took it in stride, even though you weren't expecting that issue to come up while tucking your little ones into bed! Even though they didn't say anything, your kids definitely noticed your reaction to the two princes, or your lack of reaction. Despite being surprised, you didn't make a big deal about it, and just kept on with the story. So when your kids hear about same sex couples in the future as they get older, they might be curious about it, but won't be predisposed to think it's gross or weird-- which is what many kids learn from watching their parents. Your kids are lucky to have such a man in their lives. With a father like you, they're bound to grow up to make some real changes in this world of ours!
My daughter has two dyke moms and we're pretty sure she'll grow up to be a fabulous straight girl, and, in the meantime, I love that there are tons of childrens' books that reflect her family. If your children think they might be - or feel - gay/lesbian at some point, having read this and other books to them will *seriously* help them accept and not question/dislike themselves and will give them the language to talk about it when they are older. I wish I'd had that when I was a young lesbian. And, yes, there are a LOT of books for young kids with queers in them and just like straight people, queers aren't all about sex, we have kids and families too, and when a prince and princess get married in a children's story it isn't sexual, so of course when a prince and prince get married in a children's book it isn't sexual. Kudos and thanks for opening your views and your children's -- one or both of them might thank you some day!
Very positive message in the delivery of your views and the way you nuture your children - they will grow up, I'm sure, to be open hearted and well rounded people and that makes me really excited and happy.
I'm amazed as well that there is a chlidren's book out there with this content. I just bumped into this vid today and I will say watching it made my week. My hope is that there are tons more parents and people out there like you...that is where the change happens.
I think this is an awesome example of why vimeo is so much better than youtube. I'll bet that if there was this same video on youtube it would have tons of immature and rude comments. All of these comments are positive. That's so great.
