There's a mathematician six floors above me where I work. I'd never had much to do with her, but I'd heard she'd had an unusual childhood in Burma, and grew up to become the first female professor of mathematics at the university where we both work. One day on Twitter she wrote, "Maths is in my heart," a sentiment both alien and amusing to me, being someone who's terrible with numbers. It stayed with me though, and later that afternoon I knocked on her door and asked if she'd tell me her story.

Many thanks to Nalini for her time.

Wow! An excellent and compelling Documentary exploring the extraordinary life and times of both an articulate and formidable Professor of Mathematics.

I very much like your understated cinematic style which allowed the 'Subject' to speak for herself. (So often, in modern filming, direction and editing styles seek to draw attention to themselves).

I loved the grading look which might be MBL MOJO.

This film has a running time of 9 minutes so You could probably have done with, in fairness, a few more cutaways , and another camera point of view. This might have served to enrich our understanding of this great Lady.

I have one other point to make.....the area within my brain in which Mathematics should reside is presently occupied by a BLACK HOLE .

Perhaps the only 9 minutes of mathematics I have given my complete attention to from beginning to end. What a curious feeling. Brilliant. Thank you. =)

I really like what you did! You are clearly able to make people tell their story, which is a good gift.

So I also like your cinematographic skills and your colors.

But I have some suggestions. =)

-music, the song goes on and on the same. Music is added for a purpose, not because it HAS to be there. You can do much with ambient sounds.
-which takes me to 'pauzes', there are none. She talks for the full 9 minutes. It is very pleasant to have breaks and have time to digest what is being told. For those moments you can also use ambient sounds.
-when she talks I do not really need to see her all the time. Because she doesn't look into the camera, the viewer also doesn't really connect with her that much. After a while this started to bother me a bit.
-so finally I think you needed a lot more shots of her doing her stuff. Also to have more options in your edit, now you use jump cuts in your edit as an solution.

I have here a link towards (a Dutch) blog I make. There you find a film 'A Life Alone' by Maisie Crow. She is an expert in all what I mentioned before.

Be inspired & keep up the good work! ;)

Thanks for your comments and suggestions, I appreciate it.

Funnily enough, I do realise that all these flaws exist (and you're not the only one who has pointed them out ;)), so don't worry, I know they are there and what I should have done to avoid them ;) I completely agree with everything you said but honestly I didn't want to intrude on the professor's time more than I already did (2 hours of an academic's time is a lot and it was the end of the day so I didn't want to keep her from heading home!) so I decided to just use what footage I had of her.. Also I wasn't sure what else I could get her to do besides draw on the blackboard, use her computer, look through photos, given we were constrained by time… I suppose that's not really an excuse and it just demonstrates that I'm not very good (yet, haha), but I guess I'll just have to think and try harder next time! :)

Thanks again for your comments and suggestions, they are really great suggestions, and thanks for the link to your blog, I will check out Maisie's video. Cheers!
