This moving and poignant documentary brings together two generations of South Africans. A young man living in the freedom which an old man fought for.
Mayenzeke Baza is a South African film-maker with a quest to discover the sacrifices made by retired revolutionary Zola Zembe, a forgotten hero of his country’s fight for freedom. From an extraordinary chance encounter in England, the friendship between the two men evolves as Zola makes a final visit to South Africa to see his family for the last time. Inspired by the former freedom fighter, Mayenzeke explores the remarkable life of a man who abandoned his family to fight on the frontline and travelled the world seeking support for the struggle of his people.
Through interview, observation and archive, Mayenzeke finds a broken family, still coming to terms with the trauma of their separation. He discovers the extent of the worldwide effort to bring down apartheid. And as he travels, he begins to ask questions of himself and view his country with fresh eyes. Is his generation ready to fight for the justice which must accompany the freedom which Zola helped to win?
