Very well explained. That soft box rocks. What light were you mounting it to?
  • Realm Pictures pro 2 months ago
it's a double filament 500/1000w halogen light - pretty simple and cheap!
  • Tree Light Pictures plus 2 months ago
Cool. Do you have any issues with it getting really hot?
  • Realm Pictures pro 2 months ago
its better to use something like a Kino Flo, or better yet our DIY LED lights (shameless plug) as these are almost heat-free.

We wanted to use something a little more common for the tutorial so that people wouldn't feel that they couldn't follow along.

The soft box looks like it needs to be really close is that correct? If it was further back would that make a fill light nessasary?
  • Realm Pictures pro 2 months ago
    Hey Sam,

Yes - the closer the light, the bigger it appears from the subject's point of view. That's what makes it soft.

You could take the biggest soft box in the world, but if it is far away it will produce much harder light than a tiny hard light that is 6 inches away from your subject.

    Does that make sense?
  •
  • Tobit Emmens plus 2 months ago
that is great, thanks. question, what bulb are you using in the angle-poise 'hair light' lamp?
  • Realm Pictures pro 2 months ago
Hey Tobit, that would be an 85w CFL (compact fluorescent light)
  • Jibe Visuals plus 2 months ago
What Color Temp was the 85w CFL you were using? Seems to be hard to find them in 3400K
  • Tobit Emmens plus 2 months ago
thanks Eve - do you buy locally? its just I am having fun trying to track down a decent 56k cfl (and when you say 85, are you talking the clf wattage or the equivalent wattage)

Nice :) Some information, that I didn't catch in any tutorial before (like using the hair lighting and not using fill lighting). I'd also really appreciate (or however you spell it...) how to do some moving lighting, like in close up action scenes.
    Best wishes friends!

Inspiring tutorial. The quality of this one tutorial led me to spend the last two evenings watching ALL of your past vids. Amazing video blog to go along with a massive project.

Was the hair light (CFL) daylight balanced like the back wall light? Appeared to have a blue tint.

I imagine more tutorials like these will drive even more donations. Good luck!
  • Realm Pictures pro 2 months ago
Yes your are correct, the CFL is daylight balanced. It doesn't have to be but can help in separating the subject from the background if it is.

We're working on more now :D

Love the 2nd video on lighting too! I understand that you everyone to walk away with the message that this type of lighting can be achieved with even inexpensive local light sources. Nevertheless, would you kindly share the model types you've employed here in this video?

Many thanks to all you guys!

    Hi Eve,
Nice tutes. Thanks. Do you have any tutes for daylight scenes using plenty of daylight - cafes, outdoor areas? Hit'n'run scenes.

What stand are you using for the hair light?

    Look forward to more!
  • Eve Hazelton 1 month ago
The stand is a c-stand type stand so you can get it directional overhead :D

  • I found this super helpful, thanks so much! I'm about to shoot some doco style interviews so I will use some of what I learned. A quick question though, what kind of settings did you use on your 7d and 550d (wb,aperture, iso, lense etc) Would be a huge help if you could let me know. Cheers!
