The Daytona Longboard Classic
Daytona Beach, Florida was one of the first cities on the East Coast of the United States to develop a small group of people participating in the ancient Hawaiian sport of surfing. Daytona Beach's first surfers date back to the 1920s and have direct ties to Tom Blake and Duke Kahanamoku. The paddleboards of that era gave way to longboards and then shortboards, and there hasn't been a strictly longboard contest in Daytona Beach since that's what surfing was. Check out Daytona Beach's boardwalk at the Main Street Pier, the bandshell, the bikini contest and the surfing contest of the first annual Daytona Longboard Classic held Saturday, Feb. 21, 2009.
