Brain scanning technologies stand poised to revolutionize our understanding of pedophilia and hebephilia. Even though the first MRI studies of those conditions were reported less than five years ago, increasingly detailed brain mapping is already leading to new insights into how these disorders develop, and research teams internationally are reporting preliminary studies, laying the groundwork for the development of an fMRI–based test of pedophilia. Although the potential importance of MRI technologies is widely recognized, their results and implications have not yet been widely discussed outside the scientific arena. In this lecture, Dr. Cantor will summarize—in English—the results from his and other brain research teams, review their implications for our understanding of sexual interests in children, and explore the implications of this work for our professional ethics and public policy.
