Just messing around in maya with some settings. This test was done more to just have one of the comparison tests on vimeo than to actually compare the smoke. Most of it's at default settings but what I did change I'll list below:
150 square resolution
High detail solve (all fields)
Emitters only emit smoke (fuel and temperature have been disabled)
And of course I changed the swirl amount under velocity.
Rendered with Mental Ray
Lastly it was composited in AE with some color correction, blur, sharpening, and grain. It's not meant to be beautiful smoke, it's just to get the motion visually appealing and I feel it works.
