70. Jakob & Ricky (and a little Julia) Discuss Men's Fashion
1 year ago
We were sitting around Jake's office at Vimeo, and I asked Ricky how J's abysmal lack of style first began ... Apparently I missed the worst of it. Whew times 10.

At one point, not on camera, I told J that his shirt (seen in the video) "made me want to vomit." It was perhaps a bit too harsh, but he's shown remarkable ability to improve lately, and this was no exception. He agreed that it wasn't the most flattering cotton based product he could wear, and he seemed eager to go beyond. But how?

I guess it seems that the Edu-ma-cation of Mr. Lodwick's style falls to me, and the bevy of style experts I have at my disposal (one of the perks of my job). So we're going to film it! "Jake Learns How to Dress Himself" will be a multi-part series, as we follow J from a raggedy hipster-esque boy wearing (in his own words) "rat clothes" to a, um ... stylish, confidant, rico-suave business man. (okay, maybe not the "rico-suave" part. but the rest) GQ, watch out.

PS. NONE of this, except the teeshirt critique, came from me. I didn't suggest he dress differently, I just nodded in agreement when he said he wanted to ... if he decided to continue to dress the way he does now, I wouldn't put up a fight (not worth it). That said, if I never saw the teeshirt he's wearing now again, I would do a small dance of glee.

if he likes the natural stuff tell him to try tea tree oil deodorant.
  • Jakob Lodwick 1 year ago
    Is it deodorant or "deodorant"?
  • heather 1 year ago
if you're asking if it's like degree deodorant or like Tom's "deodorant" it's like Tom's.
  • dalas verdugo staff 1 year ago
    I use "nothing" brand deodorant.
  • Julia Allison 1 year ago
I hear the "nothing" brand doesn't work very well.
  • heather 1 year ago
depends on the person truthfully. Most days I use "nothing" brand and I'm perfectly fine. Other days if I'm going to be something active I use Aromaco by Lush coupled with a peppermint deodorant because I like the smell of peppermint.

I should add that I am wearing this shirt again, today. I think I have worn it every day except two in the past week.

Don't let her change you! Stand up Jake!
  • Jakob Lodwick 1 year ago
I have nothing to stand up for!
  • Julia Allison 1 year ago
Oh, boy. I'm not trying to change him!!!!! it was HIS OWN IDEA! I knew everyone would think that, that's why I added the PS at the bottom. Seriously. I never mentioned his apparel once before he came out and said "I want to dress differently." So. Guilt-trip me not, please!

Kind of funny how you are a partner in a company that makes and sells clothes, yet you only own three shirts...why not just take a few home.

Mo with the umbrella, best part. Quite the fashion juxtaposition as well.
  • eric cwiertny 1 year ago
    The umbrella part was PERFECT!

I thought it was only antiperspirant, and not deodorant, that had Mercury in it and/or gives you Alzheimer's.
  • dalas verdugo staff 1 year ago
It's pretty difficult to find deodorant that is not antiperspirant. Old Spice is one, but it smells like old man.
  • Jacob 1 year ago
yeah, thats the only one i know of and thus what i use.

I DONT SMELL LIKE OLD MAN. i smell good :(

What i learned from this video.
Jakob used to want to destroy the world (the whole up is down, black is white thing.)
Now he doesn't want to destroy it (Using Tom's products.)

also i like how that guy comes in, plays around with the umbrella in the background, and then ends the video with a request.
One Guy can do so much..

Deodorant is for suckers. The natural stuff is better.
  • Karlin 1 year ago
Ditto, dude. "Natural shit" = way better than putting weird chemicals all over yourself.

Someone who is confident enough to dress ugly in protest against fashion is a lot cooler than someone who tries to buy all the right clothes to be visually acceptable to society. Of course, having said that, some jobs require "uniforms", such as a job on TV where you are required to look styled and polished. However, in Jake's case, it doesn't seem that his career demands a certain look. In fact I think the way he chooses to dress and carry himself works in his favor.

I think it's great that you are going to help him buy some new clothes and develop a sense of style, especially because it's his choice... but I hope he will still dress "ugly" from time to time.

I get frustrated with fashion because I think people try too hard, it's superficial, it's a waste of time, as Jake mentioned. Not only that, but it's just a trick to make us spend all our money on things that really don't matter. Instead of fretting over which shoes we should get to go with our new designer jeans, we should be trying to become better humans working toward making the world a better place.
Also, I feel that people shouldn't judge a person by the clothes they wear, yet at the same time it's unavoidable. Personally, I tend to flock toward the anti-fashionistas so it turns out I'm not much different than those who would scoff at someone wearing last season's styles.

This video is just really interesting to me, and has me thinking a lot about fashion/anti-fashion and the way people view one another in the world. I'm writing far too much for a simple video.

Hey, good luck to you and Jake on your shopping expeditions! I think it will be a lot of fun. Take a camera along, and show us what he chooses :)

"Instead of fretting over which shoes we should get to go with our new designer jeans, we should be trying to become better humans working toward making the world a better place."

that was kinda corny but SUPER adorable. :)

    I'm the queen of cliches
  • I agree, and have a mental battle about this constantly, but honestly, though I dislike the obsession with fashion, anti-fashion is a fashion in itself... soo it's a losing battle.

And seriously, you can project a quality about yourself just by the way you're dressed. People will think of you a certain way. It's unfair, and I wish it didnt' quite work like that, but if you dress decently, you may find you're accepted, listened to, and appreciated more readily.

stick with the natural stuff, jake. i think that you should do what you want, and let other people deal with it. i feel like being secure and content with yourself makes fashion obsolete. it's time we all got over it and moved on. what some call tacky, others say is fun. this years fashion blunders will be way hip at some point in the future. keeping up with the times is pointless, even dull.
  • victoria 1 year ago
yeah, that's what I meant to say. haha

    also, try Jason deodorant.

This is too funny. 3 shirts? I have a drawer full of shirts that have now become my wife's shirts to wear around the house. I'll be updating this springs wardrobe with BustedTee's :)

back in high school i had a major crush on this punk girl. one day she came to my chem class dressed in nothing but a plastic garbage bag. finally the teacher asked her why she would wear something like that. she said "because i know it bothers people like you." rock-n-roll.

Sounds like a supply teacher we had, to fit in I called her binner!! ( as in refference to her home made plastic bin liner dress ) I had to hide secretly that I knew what she was doing was awesome. But not worth getting beaten up by my WHOLE class for standing up for her...

    1. It's actually aluminum and you eat aluminum everyday. The whole aluminum-in-deodorant-makes-you-Alzheimer's has been busted a long time ago.

    2. Ricky is a prophet.

    3. I think Julia has a small crush on Ricky.
  • dalas verdugo staff 1 year ago
Just because you're exposed to some amount of aluminum naturally doesn't mean you should unnecessarily expose yourself to more.
  • Julia Allison 1 year ago
It's true!!! I have a puppy crush on Ricky. But by "puppy crush" I mean that I see him like I see my puppy Lilly/Marshmallow. Adorable, makes me smile, a little shaggy, but, I mean, I wouldn't want to make out with her.
  • Alex McCollister 1 year ago
dalas: Too, true. I should have specified what I meant. I just don't think that the aluminum in deodorants is this Alzheimer's causing, black-and-white, agent that it gets painted as. I think that if someone's worried about the aluminum in deodorant, then they should also be aware of the toxins in non-stick cookware, tea, processed cheeses, not to mention your water.

Julia: Puppy crush! THAT'S the word I was looking for.

This was fun to watch...more insight to what makes the talented Mr. Lodwick tick... focusing on the important things and not sweating (pardon the pun) the "small stuff" like fashion.

I think of it as a "wild things run free" type of thing. In elementary school, Jakob wore two different colors of Converse hi-tops (made from two separate pairs). No one else did that, but a few years later other people started doing it. In high school he started wearing t-shirts from Goodwill with outlandish (or, at the very least, irrelevant) things printed on them (like the one he describes in this clip). That was years before Busted Tees.

Not saying everyone will start wearing one shirt (or 3) over and over as a statement about the worth of fashion, though come to think of it that may not be so bad. It's just that Jakob has always marched to a different drummer, sartorially and otherwise. It's part of what makes him who he is.

But, hey, maybe things will change. I've always thought he looked great when he was dressed up: flickr.com/photos/anugent/44746758
