DIY, aluminum, low consumption illuminated house number with a photocell that will turn it on at night and off during the day.
We are making 2, 3 and 4 digits in different sizes.
The color of the light can also be customized.

this is just asking for some teenager to come up and mess it up by punching the rest of the holes out

Good point, but once it is assembled it is pretty hard to remove the circles.
The layers behind the aluminum face make it impossible to twist the dots to remove them.

I find this comment insulting to teenagers.

I guess I didn't find it insulting because I would do exactly that if was 15 again :)

The slugs could still very easily be popped out by a sharp screwdriver or a pocket knife but what hoodlum carries a pocket knife? I'm sure it'll be fine.

It's not the easiest to read either. A better solution would have been to stamp from the back and set the press a few thou short of punching through. The front would look like it was custom made and you'd never know that it was modular. ...but of course, you wouldn't have your harder to read, easily vandalized "design feature".

Also. Electroluminescent sheet usually has a life span of 5000-12000 hours. Guessing that this will be on for 8 hours a day you get 2 to 4 years out of your product. Do you really think this is long enough for a light source that the average customer wouldn't have a clue as to how they would replace it? One more "pretty" piece of landfill in a few years time. Also the fact that it uses ANY power at all when there are very effective, un-powered alternatives is a huge negative in my book.

Forgive my harshness but I am sick and tired of products designed for a throwaway consumerist life style. My rule of thumb for purchasing ANY product is, "Will it be an antique someday?" Will someone want this in 50 years time? Burned out El sheet and an aluminum plate? Probably not. How about solid brass house numbers done in an art deco font from the 30's? Yeah, I'd say people would buy those today. Design a future antique and people will always want it.
  • Brad, did you join Vimeo to only voice your opinion here? If anything is a waste of space and time it is comments like yours. What have you done to contribute to humanity lately?

And besides, if there wasn't any pretty pieces of landfill, what would Wall-E put in his bachelor pad in a couple of years? Eve has to find a good shag somewhere...

peace and love from your brother,
