For editors burrowing into Final Cut Pro X, the landscape is looking better all the time. With its many new features, fast rendering and wide range of ergonomic niceties, we have to admit it is growing on us.
New in the last week is Tonalizer by Irudis. It's a very extensive, deep and talented grading / image correcting / rescue plug-in that works on all the Final Cuts—even Express—plus Motion 4 and 5.
Features like Highlight Rescue and Shadow Recovery, Midtones (adjustment), Noise elimination and many other controls make it a very cool utility that gets used all the time.
This example shows a beach scene with washed out skies, sandy mid tones and a colorful actor whose plumage deserves to be recovered from its contrasty shadows.
Our Tonalization (new buzzword) brightens shadows, deepens highlights and floats a warm "Golden Hour" tint into the late afternoon shot. Talking about it takes longer than doing it.
