Demonstration of the new and free High Dynamic Range VIDEO feature for control over ultra contrast situations.

Magic Lantern is a custom firmware add-on for Canon dSLR cameras. It is not a hack, or a modified firmware, but it runs alongside Canon's own firmware, booting from the card every time you turn the camera on. The only modification to the original firmware is the ability to boot software from the card.

Great video. It is being rolled back to the 5D Mark II. HDR video is in there just need testing and bug fixing. I am testing the beta unified Magic Lantern here (with example video), thanks Alex! eoshd.com/content/6640/eoshd-tests-the-new-magic-lantern-unified-on-5d-mark-ii

Reminded of a similar trailer a year ago for 5k shooting.
One can hope, and Magic Lantern makes those dreams come true, in mangy cases!

Except that this one is realy :D
  •
  • Valdis Krumins 2 months ago
Well if it records each frame in different exposure then it means we get like 24/2=12fps in hdr ?
  • chris gallimore 2 months ago
    I was just about to post something similar;
Doesn't this mean we could essentially overcrank to 60p in 1080p mode?
  • Jimmy Tran 2 months ago
No. Because you are interpolating the frames (also called tweening) shot between the exposures of the same ISO, you will end up with a video of the same frame rate, but with HDR.
  •
  • Casey Pegram 2 months ago
What are you using to interpolate those frames back, optical flow? It would be nice if the motion data from the other 'stream' could help fill that in better because you do get artifacts at times from purely interpolating new frames.

And yeah, this gave me flashbacks to the 4K firmware thing.

Also - will the 5D ever support HDR mode or is the hardware too outdated versus the newer Canons?
  • Bart@RedKiteMedia 2 months ago
avisynth interframe filter is pretty powerful. We use that

Is it possible to see this feature in the 5DmkII in the future? I doesn't use ML yet in my 5DmkII, but if this "Dynamic Range pusher" thing released I hardly thinking to use it.

if you look carefully to the pen and the head in the bar scene you see something like a strobo shutter effect in movement
so i guess that that is what happens, and i believe
that for pan and other movement with the rolling shutter issue maybe we will have something usable in 720p, but any way if it is true is a real christmas gift...
    we will see
  • Bart@RedKiteMedia 2 months ago
It's the interpolation that doesn't have enough information to generate a perfect match. It happens with fast movements@12,5fps. You can't tell the program that it's dealing with walking legs. 720p@50 can handle faster movements because of the smaller movement intervals.

Absolute Amazingness. What is the workflow? Postprocess step where you merge to EXRs? Now if only someone would make an After Effects/Premiere plugin for HDR tonemapping on the data...

Sounds nice but I feel the interpolation may cause issues with high movement scenarios! Pretty insane idea tho and very cool for controlled environments

  • Philip Bloom pro 2 months ago
    Impressive
  • Philip, you need to jump onto ML ASAP man. I know you have your worries from a bricked 550D, but those issues have been ironed out awhile ago.

It's MUCH easier to install and update now and not nearly as cumbersome as it used to be. I do hope you give it a try, man.
  • a1ex 2 months ago
And Philip's problem had nothing to do with Magic Lantern, it was a mechanical shutter failure.
  • Philip Bloom pro 2 months ago
it was? you know better than me then! the camera would not turn on again.

i think i may have better knowledge on this :)
  • a1ex 2 months ago
From your screenshot on Twitter, ERR20 is shutter failure.

If there's some other issue, tell me more.
  • Philip Bloom pro 2 months ago
yes that was the temp error and then it wouldn't turn on either after that. Dead. Bricked. Trust me. It was my camera.
  • a1ex 2 months ago
    There are some simple checks:
    - If it shows something in viewer, it's alive. I guess it's not the case.
    - I guess it won't boot without card, right?
    - With a ML card (bootable+autoexec.bin), try to start the camera. If the LED blinks, the bootloader is working (and I can troubleshoot it from there). If it's not blinking, it's 99% hardware failure.

The bootloader is ran before loading the main firmware, and it's something that ML doesn't touch at all. It's extremely unlikely that ML can alter it.

On the other hand, it is possible to cause bricking-like symptoms if ML sets some wrong parameter and that one gets saved to ROM. But it's possible to recover from this. I did it a few times and got scared at first (many months ago).
  • Bart@RedKiteMedia 2 months ago
But Philip, What if it was a mechanical failure. That would be bad right? Because you are an influential person. A lot of people believe what you say.

I’m a nobody in filmland. Let me try that:
    ------------------
    Hi,
I am Bart and a complete timelapse addict. Me and my timelapse travel the world for years. In my hotelroom, I can’t fall asleep without hearing the sound of at least 2 shutters every 10 seconds. Now I have a shutter failure and I think it’s Magic Lantern.
    ------------------

Well mister bloom if you still have a Canon dslr left with a shuttercount less than the amount of twitter followers. I suggest to try Magic Lantern and you’ll find out that this IS the ultimate Bloom camera. All you ever dreamed of is right in that machine. Buy yourself an old nikon, pentax 1.4 50 (I hear they have build in an aliasing, moire and cosmo filter called “not so insane sharp”). Learn some monopod moves and dance around Stillmotion style. Go out in the streets like the old days. Film that copper scope once more and show us spontanious reactions of happy people and inspire people like you did me.
  • Josh Piersma 2 months ago
Nice reference to the copper scope. that video forced me to buy a hv20 and build a dof adapter.
  • fsm vpggru 2 months ago
I love Magic Lantern and have used it a few times on jobs and personal projects, this HDR feature is off the hook!!!
But tales of dead cameras make me nervous, I am proper skint and have just one movie capable HDSLR body, I may have to let this update settle a little before I use it.
    Does look amaaaaaaaaaaaaazing though!
  • Bart@RedKiteMedia 2 months ago
Through this event we get an idea of how many people are using ML. And it is a lot bigger then we thought and it became even bigger after 22 dec.
Okay so look all over the internet. Since last few days internet is flooded with positive users. Just look around!
  • Philip Bloom pro 2 months ago
    Bart,

Your words are not coming across well...It's not convincing me. It's doing the opposite. I am allowed to have a nervous opinion about it as I am not the only one who has issues. If loads of people are having great success then terrific! That does not take away from the fact that a few have not had good luck with it.

    Philip
  • Bart@RedKiteMedia 2 months ago
    Hi Philip,

I assume you red the long version. Now I replace it with the short one. For me Magic Lantern has proven to be a mature product. I'm a happy user for a year now. In July I added a 600d to my 550d, and had ML running within 5 minutes after arrival. If you don't want it. Fine by me.

If you still have the 550d, report it to the issue tracker and we are glad to help.

Here is my movie: "Winter evening" I made last year with one of the first Magic Lantern releases.
    vimeo.com/20360933
In between shooting, the custom kelvin feature was added. The yellowish shots are before and the broader color spectrum ones after. That was great!
  • marco gualtieri 1 month ago
I got a T2i after much research including videos from Bloom. I tried one of the first Magic Lantern versions for the T2i and although it worked, I didn't much like it. I decided to take another look a few weeks ago. WOW this has become a professional and slick product. I am sure that Canon engineers are impressed with the current state of affairs!

Bloom has a lot of pull and if his camera got bricked, why not send it to the ML team and let them debug it? It might be worth your while.
  • Waterline Media plus 1 month ago
Err 20 code has nothing to do with ML and it is not bricked if can read the screen, but mechanical issue and typically with shutters... I have had 3 of them crap out and sent them back to be repaired with a full writeup and there was no ML installed on there. Also the bodies I have installed ML on do better with temps and overheating than straight from the factory. These things may be tanks on the outside but have fragile itty bitty parts on the inside. Rockon Guys! If the corporations won't provide us with the stuff we want then it takes a few smart guys to make it happen I am ecstatic about it.

Doesn't seem like it would be possible on 5D. Could be wrong but looks like what they're doing is shooting 720/48 or 50 or 60 and changing the ISO between two values every frame. Then splitting it into 2 timelines and smoothing it out with frame interpolation software in post. Could be wrong though, but if that's the case not possible on 5D.

BRILLIANT!! I've always thought of this idea, just with two T2i's mounted onto each other with different exposures set on each, but this is even more genius of an idea than I could have even come close to conceiving!! Keep it up Team Magic Lantern!!!!

as i understand we get 25 fps on 1080p25 if we interpolate frames.. will see how it looks in practise!! i didn't hope to get HDR with 550D from ML, this is a BIG SURPRISE!!!

  • ephisus 2 months ago
Really interesting idea, but the interpolation is creating too many artifacts.

Regardless with how it performs, this is still stunning! Amazing effort guys, amazing. Way to go for thinking out side the box, you should win some kind of Nobel Peace Prize for bringing this kind of feature to the masses at no cost.

Again, regardless of how well it works, it's the concept that is simply mind blowing... a Red-esque feature on a $600 DSLR!!!!
