Beautiful work and excellent casting on the narrator -- reminiscent of Richard Burton on the BBC Radio version of Under Milkwood.

What camera, glass, and grading did you use?
  • Kid Mountain 1 month ago
They have twixtor tagged, plus I could imagine it being an ok thing to have a bit of portability in the jungles of Malaysia.

I would guess toward 7D with some nice, clean anamorphics. On second thought, maybe it's just cropped?
  • Daniel Carr 1 month ago
It's just a crop. You can tell by the bokeh in the close up shots.
  • James W Griffiths plus 1 month ago
Yes its cropped. We shot on a Canon 1D Mark IV and graded using Color Finesse in After Effects. Happy you like it!

  • what a treat. So origional and artistic. I love the border you used around the video as well and the narrator's voice. I don't watch many video's on Vimeo anymore because many feel like repeats or non stop time lapse and shaky dslr:p. But this was great. Cheers

    Was this shot in Sarawak?
  • Azrai Paharodzi 1 month ago
I was wondering the same thing! Didn't realize it was shot in Malaysia until he stated it at the end of the video there.
It could either be in Sarawak or Sabah.
  • James W Griffiths plus 1 month ago
Unfortunalty we didn't get time to go to Sarawak or Sabah. Its all shot in West Malaysia. Would have loved to go there and film some of the bigger animals.

  • Flat Steve 1 month ago
hi, interesting movie. however, if this is meant to be an ode to the beautiful nature of malaysia, why is, that all in all this clip looks so dark, tragically? It does not have any inviting, positive message at all, or am I wrong? the dark, colorless grading simply does not make me want to go there. don't get me wrong, but if Malaysia Tourism want's people to come over, it's nature should look a bit more colorful and inviting, not to say a bit more positive. technically some shots, like the ones from the apes are out of focus (focus on hair instead of the eyes). other than that props for all the efforts, must have been hard to produce. cheers (ps, upload it on HD, and things may look better)
  • Salomon plus 1 month ago
Sorry mate - I don't agree at all. The mood makes Malaysia seem super intriguing/magical! And the out of focus stuff didn't bother me at all because the sound design and narration carried the piece strongly enough - so that did not seem like an issue.

Again it's all subjective, but I thought it was insanely fresh and poetic - and served it purpose - on me at least
  • Mihael Tominšek plus 1 month ago
I feel same as 'Flat Steve'. It is beautiful and perfectly done: but for a drama or horror movie. I'm a bit scared watching this clip, waiting at every scene, when something terrible will happen. It's like a teaser for the movie "The Earth after last human was killed by...". Or maybe I'm watching too much Hollywood's movies and I'm already pre-scared if I see bleached colors, slow pans, scenes without a living creature and placid music... I like the clip a lot, but it's scary to me not inviting. I wouldn't go there too. All my childish fears of dark, wolfs and being lost, wake up in me...
  • Justin Wagner 1 month ago
I want to go to Malaysia now! I'll agree the mood is somewhat foreboding, but any worthwhile jungle is supposed to be. I imagine a time when much of the world is uncharted and who knows what's left to be discovered. Ancient ruins inhabited by cannibals, downed ufo, king kong, who knows! Machu Picchu wasn't discovered until 1911, maybe Malaysia has a few secrets...
