I'm confused as to how, as Christians, you believe it is okay to break the law by trespassing, and destroying property.
  • Matthew Kern says"I'm confused as to how, as Christians, you believe it is okay to break the law by trespassing, and destroying property. "

Friend,Are you a christian? Just wondering. Well I am and skateboarding isnt about trepassing or destroying property. How about driving a car? How do you feel about poluting the air? Its the same thing. You grind on a ledge, you get paint on that ledge, well what if i spilt my soda on the ledge.. is it still "destroying" property? in your definition I would argue yes.

Some skateboarders do destroy property like spray painting on peoples houses ect ect, then some skateboarders do drugs, does that mean every skateboarder does these things??? NO!

Jesus said that the greatest commandments were to love God with all your heart, mind and soul... and to love your neighbor as yourself. As long as you keep those two things in line, I believe a christian will be alright. If your loving your neighbor as yourself, then you wouldnt want to destroy your neighbors stuff..

    .. you know?

    skateboarding isnt illegal...

these guys travel the world and spread Gods word through skateboarding. they usually have their own demos with their own ramps, and when they are skating in public they are respectful to authority. im confused as to how you dont get that...
  • Matthew Kern 9 months ago
I never said that skateboarding was illegal.
I have been skateboarding for the past 11 years, and I understand that when you skate on private property, 99% of the time the owner doesn't want you there. Although I believe that many of the laws practiced in the US contradict Christ's teachings, I do believe that most "Christians" acknowledge that breaking any law that is not in direct conflict with scripture is sinful. Therefore, as I stated, I do not understand how, as Christians, members of Siren and Reliance can convince themselves that it is anything other than sinful to destroy others property.

ITD Films: How can you relate spitting on a sidewalk to grinding concrete off a ledge or chipping a granite ledge? These are things even more difficult to repair than spray painting the side of a house.

And Chad, I understand that most of the time Reliance and Siren host demos at which they are not destroying anything against the wishes of the owner.

Truthfully, I think the person that is at the head of this ministry ignores the fact that it is sinful to break the law, because he or she believes that if these Christian skateboarders were not skating on the same thing that everyone else was skating on that their evangelism would be less effective.

Pharisaical if you ask me. Anyway, I will be surprised if I am not censored, by having this post removed. I hope that I have not confused you, as you did me.

hey man, i totally see where you are coming from. i'd just like to say i feel the same way. I try not to go skate places where I see no skateboarding signs ect. and some places we ask before we skate. we try to build random stuff, or skate ditches, or skate in a way we aren't ruining property.

but me along with everyone else we are far from perfect. we do go places we know we shouldn't. and sometimes we get into some trouble over it. trust me this is a disscussion me and all these guys are always having like choosing carefully what we skate and how we go about filming on other's propertys.

i hope that explains alittle. like I said we are far from perfect we make mistakes too. but I must also say when i was growing up i would skate in front of my house everyday. and about 3 times a week a neighbor would call the cops. every week. I would get hasseled for skating a flat bar in front of my house! I just say that as an example that no matter where you skate there will always be people who disagree with it.

but i do totally agree that it isn't right to tear up and ruin others property. we just try and be careful about it all.

    THANKS!
